Default Email from United re: availability date

I just received an interesting email from United via airlineapps. The subject line stated "Your availability for employment". The text started off by saying that they've reviewed my application and found me very competitive. They said they would like to begin my selection process but my availability date is too far in the future (August 2017). It then said to email them directly when I'm within 6 months, at which point they will "begin our interview process". I'd be happy to post the text of the email if anyone is interested.

I've been lurking for a while and have heard of he TBNT email, the fix it email, and others but haven't read about anyone receiving one of these email. Does anyone have any familiarity with this? I'm wondering how long it's good for. My assumption is since they know my current availability date, I'm guessing (as of now) I could conceivably wait until 6 months prior to that? Yes, I know this is far from a guarantee and anything can happen between now and then.

As background, I'm a mil guy and an AF reservist currently on a non-flying 3 year AGR tour - the August date is the end of my AGR order. Thanks for any help and advice anyone can provide!

Seems straightforward. When you are six months out from your availability date shoot them an email and start the process.
I know previously, once hired you could defer a class date for unto a year. - id imagine thats still true today. Seniority being everything, if was me, id email them exactly 6 months out. -and then be in the first class i could.. be it 6 months, 6 1/2, 7 etc.

They started doing this after some feedback from the ALPA hosted Military Hiring Webinars.

They see what they like in you. Contact them as per the instructions say when you are available to United to start training six months prior. They understand the date can move up so if you get released earlier, don't hesitate to contact them.

I've got a buddy (mil) who received a similar email a few weeks ago. He is also 1 yr out. I agree with "All in" send it right at six months. The Dir of Hiring us last week that they are planning to hire 1000 in 2016.

You've been out of the jet since August 2014, and essentially got an invite to interview? Good on ya!.....the "official" word is that you need 100 hours in the past year to get a call from UAL. Looks like that may not be set in stone.

Thanks for all the replies. Good to hear others have received this and that it's a relatively new process. I'll be doing exactly as everyone says and hitting "send" right at the 6 month point. There may be an opportunity to curtail - although the expiration of my order coincides almost exactly with me hitting 20 yrs AD. But I know, I've been doing the seniority math for months.

And yes, my last flight was Aug 2014 and I haven't flown since then (except a few hours for my ATP). I too was surprised since I've read about the 100 hrs in 12 months rule. But yes, looks like that may not be hard and fast...

Jim,

I don't want to sound like a wet blanket so please don't take offense. You might be very qualified for what they are looking for today. But as more time goes by, you may fall in the qualification game. The interviewees are chosen by a computer. As you continue in your desk job this year, you may fall out of whatever criteria the computer looks at for recent experience. My take is the email was not an invite to interview...it was more of a "let us know when the time gets closer and we will take a look to see if you have all the squares filled".

They have so many applications to sift through...for class dates they need to fill NOW or YESTERDAY. There will be plenty of empty seats for you when your time comes. I'm sure your numbers and quals will still be highly desired when the times rolls around.

I know that in the last hiring boom (late 90's) recent flying time was not a factor for military guys.
