Drug Shortages Forcing Hard Decisions on Rationing Treatments

Such shortages are the new normal in American medicine. But the rationing that results has been largely hidden from patients and the public.

In recent years , shortages of all sorts of drugs — anesthetics, painkillers, antibiotics, cancer treatments — have become the new normal in American medicine. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists currently lists inadequate supplies of more than 150 drugs and therapeutics, for reasons ranging from manufacturing problems to federal safety crackdowns to drugmakers abandoning low-profit products.

(Don'tcha love how they insert the "federal safety crackdowns" (FDA) in the middle there? )
....

...decisions about conserving, substituting and allocating scarce drugs typically are made by small groups of doctors and pharmacists (read: death panels); Dr. Kodish’s ethics committee is not involved.

Funny how this wasn't a problem just 8 short years ago, isn't it? Thanks Obamacare.

Pretty obvious why this is happening. And yes the Obamaphillies will be here before long in full denial mode.

Socialism always fails. It's going to be interesting see by how much of landslide this election goes.

Re-education camps, thought and speech crimes are here, too. Just ask Melissa Click and friends. (Unbelievably, she is still employed. Though hopefully not for much longer.)

P.S. I hope everyone realizes Che Guevara is a murderer by his own hand and by coercing his followers to commit mass murder. I'm sick of him being held up as a "revolutionary" and "for the people." Barf.

First video is about cool commies...if you watch or read nothing else I posted, watch that!!!

Assault media student? Check. Call for other students to assault said media student? Check. Deny media students (the craft which you supposedly teach and espouse) their First Amendment rights? Check.

Keep your job? Check. Dodge any meaningful legal consequences? Check.

Hoss, it is not obvious at all. These reasons are complex and not driven by one factor. I'm not sure this is a case where less government regulation would be a good thing for stuff you're going to put in your body. Most of the drugs are sterile anesthesia drugs or a few chemotherapy drugs.

OTOH cyclical shortages in the drugs have been used as a big reason for making public delivery (NHS / Canadian model) for better planning of supply chain, so let's be careful what we wish for.

US Propofol Drug Shortages: A Review of the Problem and Stakeholder Analysis

I'm no huge fan of the ACA but these shortages have been going on long, long before it was implemented. People said the same thing about Medicare when that was signed into law (drug rationing). Shortages have little to do with most recent changes in upstream reimbursement, which may have made them slightly improved (better orphan drug coverage than private plans and ensuring manufacturers will get paid for a little-used drug.)

Pretty good list, I would add the veterans administration. No finer example of socialized medicine.

Just curious what would you replace it with? Just asking.
