Allow me to be the naysayer and public enemy #1.

Do we need a new trainer? Much of the fighter mission will be pushed to the UAV world in the next decade or two.

Do bomber pilots need to fly the T-38? This could reduced the number of pilots flying the T-38.

Yes I'm an ignorant tanker bubba and there's probably a lot I don't know. But dollars are tight and I don't trust the industrialized military war machine anymore. They're not working for our best interests. I'm not some Rand Paul or liberal zealot either.

I don't think you can make a case for a manned fighter going forward.

How are those UAVs going to operate in an EM denied environment?

When I was in UPT, everybody needed to fly T-38s. The AF wanted the ability to assign any pilot to any airplane, even though they might never have to do it. Have they decided to return to the single-track system?

Return to Single-Track UPT?
—JOHN A. TIRPAK2/13/2015
Air Education and Training Command is considering a return to single-track undergraduate pilot training as part of its pursuit of the T-X trainer, AETC chief Gen. Robin Rand said Thursday. Speaking with reporters at AFA’s Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Rand said, “we need to look into that, and we are,” but a decision hasn’t been made to consolidate the fighter/bomber and tanker/transport tracks. There are “plenty of benefits” of single-tracking UPT, he said. Fewer aircraft and fewer instructors would be needed, and eliminating the T-1 while consolidating with the T-6 and T-X would save on logistics and beddown. The move would add “flexibility” to the rated pilot community, by making it possible for all pilots to return as instructor pilots, Rand said, and also build a more cohesive pilot culture. The downside would be “you have to buy more T-Xs.”USAF hasn’t done the comparative analysis needed to make a UPT decision; cost is one of the “overriding considerations” and “until we really know the cost of the T-X, you can’t really nail that down.” Rand added, “We have time,” because the T-X project is just getting started.

It is going to be urban for the forseeable future.

No. Navy and air force are starting to develop the 6th gen fighters (fighters plural, they do not intend to repeat the joint jack-of-all-trades debacle). Word is that it will be a manned fighter, maybe optionally manned.

Probably cheaper to have everybody including heavies just fly one trainer. Adjust the syllabus as needed. CRM/Crew coordination can be learned in the sim IMO.

But nobody has the AI technology for an unmanned fighter, not even close.

You could program such an airplane to do a lot of scripted tasks but there's no assurance, or way to provide assurance, that it couldn't be fooled or spoofed.

Human pilots can learn, and are flexible enough to recognize non-reality most of the time.

Unmanned could probably do cookie-cutter tasks better than humans on average (ie landing), but throw it a curve and the results are unpredictable at this point.

Tom,
The Air Force went to a dual track system in 1995 I believe. All students fly the T-6 now, then depending on how well they do in T-6's they get FAR'ed or TTB'ed (old term, I know) the fighter guys fly T-38's and the heavy drivers fly the T-1. The different part is all bomber assignments come out of the T-38 track...going on 21 years now.

Thanks Vito. I suppose the final decision will be made by the bean-counters, but hope they return to the single track system. No heavy driver ever regretted flying the T-38!
