DTW Base Questions
Thanks in advance. |
DTW is the most junior base. CRJ only. They have CDOs and since most DTW guys wre commuters, junior guys can get CDO's there.
|
Thank you!
|
Please pardon my newbie ignorance what is a CDO?

You leave the hub around midnight, fly to an outstation, get a hotel (all while still on duty), and fly back to the hub very early in the morning. Also known as 'naps' or 'stand-ups.' |

Midnight? Don't they leave more like 9pm so that you get around 5+ hours at a hotel?
|
Our standups typically depart between 1900 and 2200...a 'great' standup gives you 8 hours in the hotel, while a lousy one gives you maybe 4.5 hours. The absolute minimum is 3 hours in the hotel, but they are never planned with that short a rest.
The only time standups depart at midnight is when the inbound plane is late, or something breaks. |

You're right. Sorry, my mistake
|
So, what's the crashpad/hotel situation like for DTW? This is all new to me. I've been on some crashpad sites but not sure if I'm going about this in the best way since some of them show dates back to like 2015...especially since reserve will be first on the list.
|
With the parking situation in DTW i would just recommend hotels. You'll save time and money in the long run.

Ask around campus. The commuters will help. I know the quality inn had a decent crew rate. There are others. I would suggest the skywest DTW crew room page on Facebook.

Ok thanks. Any tricks to finding hotels with respect to rates or is it just whatever you can find for cheap/how cheap you're comfortable with in terms of quality, etc.?
I've been looking into this as well, since I like to know what I am getting into. If you have a Marriott or other hotel card then look at one of those hotels close to the airport. Ensure it has shuttle service and if at all possible a complimentary breakfast (hey trying to save a dime right?). I called some and asked if they had aircrew prices. Most said yes and I was averaging around $65-$75/night at the ones I called. Not too bad. You won't be on Reserve forever. |
My first month on reserve I spent 200 dollars on a crashpad and nearly 50 dollars on gas for the crashpad car. I only slept in my crashpad bed 4 nights. Spent a few days there hanging out before getting called. I was used quite a bit. The next month I just stayed in hotels. 5 hotel rooms. Same cost essentially but didn't have to mess with finding my own transportation.
I accidentally said quality inn in a recent post. I forgot that is the go to ORD commuter hotel. Call the hotels north of DTW and ask for Crew rates. I'm actually breaking down and just moving to DTW. Should be upgrading soon. Don't feel like commuting to reserve. |
Clarion is the go to at DTW. Around $50 out the door, shuttle, right by airport. Its....ok.
|
Ok, with that being said... if you get assigned a 4 day block of reserve (purely example), do you book the hotel for the whole time or do you book it one night at a time since you don't know if you're going to get called?
Sorry if these are weird questions but like another poster said a few posts back, I like to know, slightly, what I'm in for! |

Would you mind sharing the knowledge ? Starting class on 9/18 and most likely expecting DTW after that. Always nice to get help from people who went thru the exact same path recently... appreciate it |

At the HoJo at least, you can usually get a late checkout (5pm), and if they don't use you by then, book another night. That is what I used to do anyway.
Put yourself on call first and cross your fingers for a multi day trip. It is kind of a crapshoot, as a lot of reserve trips end up being some kind of local (fly out empty as a rescue plane, ferry back to base etc). I liked the Quality Inn, Wyndham Garden, and as a last resort the HoJo. I heard they renovated the rooms, so maybe it is better now. All are under $50 out the door. Hope this helps. |
Hojo ain't bad. 37$ for crew rate. You can book multiple days and if you cancel early they won't charge you. Breakfast, netz, shuttle, gently used hypodermic needles, etc.
Beats the living swaz out of SFO hotels. |
I had a few other questions regarding DTW base other than what was posted.
- It seems like DTW is pretty junior at Skywest. Could you expect DTW out of training? Would you have to sit on reserve at all? - Would DTW flying be mostly CRJ200 flying or does it vary? Does it even matter whether your trips mainly consist of 200, 700, or 900 flying, minus the few dollars per hour between the different aircraft? - Is the Skywest DTW flying enjoyable for the most part for regional type flying or could you expect better trips with a different base? |
Anyone use the SIDA parking lot on the south side of the field off of Eureka? Wondering about the convenience of it compared to the public pay-to-park lots on the north side; parking spot availability, timeliness of the shuttles - where do they drop you off/pick you up.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. |

DTW is primarily 200 flying but now has dual class (700/900) flying there as well. Those trips go senior and the 700/900 locals and standups go very junior because everyone is a commuter there. Year 1 pay scale doesn't have any distinction between 2/7/9 so it doesn't matter. Not flying the 200 means better routes, better pay and just better flying in general. DTW flying is okay. I personally hated it there. It is comparable to MSP flying yet I would take a bad 4 day in MSP over a good 4 day in DTW. The crews are great in all the junior bases, small town overnights can be pretty fun believe it or not, and make sure to arm your reversers when landing in PLN. Let me know if you have any other questions. |
