Default Retiring Mil/E175/DEN

I am a retiring USAF guy moving to Denver in June. Got hired by Skywest last month...I chose the E175 based on the training there in Denver, so I would not be gone again right off the bat after moving. I was told that I could hold DEN within 3-5 months, but I have read some threads that may indicate otherwise. I know that ORD is jr on the E175...I have also read that new hires are not getting a lot of hours. Two goals...fly and limit commute. I understand that it's impossible to optimize both of those, but looking for a sound compromise. So, have I made the right decision on the E175, or would I be better off on the CRJ? How many hours could I anticipate on the E175 as a new guy for the first 3-4 months? I plan to live in Monument CO, so I am closer to COS, which would be the CRJ...but I have heard COS is more sr for CRJ FOs than on the E175/DEN, and would take up to 6 months to hold.

Any new E175 FOs out there that can give me the latest on hours? Is a goal of getting 150 within 3-4 months realistic?

Thanks!

My recommendation would be to bid BOI and avoid the DEN-ORD commute. DEN-BOI would be on company metal. It's a maintenance base though so you would be doing a lot of day before/ day after commutes if you are a line holder.

3-5 months sounds about right for DEN 175 based off what I see on the seniority list.

Most junior ERJ DEN is an August hire. Most junior CRJ DEN is a September hire. Most junior CRJ COS is an October hire. It's February, so you're likely to get COS right as you finish up IOE. The others would be a month or two of commuting to reserve.

Generally, if you're on reserve on the CRJ, you'll probably fly quite a bit, especially if you put yourself on call first. On the ERJ, not so much.

Another consideration if you plan to live in Monument...the drive to COS is a whole lot easier than the drive to DEN. Plus, the DEN employee parking lot is a solid 30 minutes from the time you park to the time you are through KCM. It's a LONG shuttle ride. Then another 15 minutes to take the train and walk all the way down the B concourse to get to the ghetto gates we use. When you pull in to COS, you're 5 minutes from the gate. I live 10 minutes south of Monument, and when I was on reserve in DEN, I had to be constantly ready to leave the house in 5 minutes and had to hope there were no accidents/unusual traffic.

With the CRJ you'd have to go to SLC for at least a month though. They do have CRJ sims in DEN, but most folks end up having to do sims in SLC. On the flip side of that, in SLC you wouldn't have the family responsibilities getting in the way of your training. I'm no dummy...I did very well in college and Navy flight training, but I'm really glad that I could just drive 10 minutes to a hotel to start my homework every night. I think if I'd had an hour+ commute each way, plus the distractions of the house, I'd have been in real trouble. The training wasn't hard, but it was VERY time consuming. They did restructure the training in the last few months though, so it may be quite different now.

Honestly, if your goals are truly to fly and limit commute, I think your best bet is CRJ COS by far. A month in SLC where SKW is paying for your hotel and you can devote 100% of your focus on training is MUCH better than a month commuting to reserve in ORD, when the lodging is on you, and they won't be flying you much.

meh, COS is 35-45 min, DEN is 60-70. I'm a commuter living in monument so 99% of the time I go out of DEN. As for the shuttle are you talking the airside one? The landside one runs every 5-10 min. From my house in monument to KCM parking landside is usually 1:20. For the OP, i'd go to whichever of the two you are more senior in and like the trips better. the difference in drive is negligible.

A few months out from applying at SKW myself and looking at a DEN base, is DEN pretty split on CRJ/ERJ flying? Or would I be a fool to choose one if I want DEN? Trying to figure all this stuff out

You could go either way in DEN. ERJ is slightly more senior in DEN, but then it’s more senior in general. You’ll fly more in the CRJ, and have more opportunity for time off in the ERJ.

CRJ will give you more flying and better schedule control.

Another bonus of CRJ is the ability to bid for COS as well, so better chances of getting back to the front range area quicker.

You won't fly much on the E175 in ORD, and even possibly even less if you make it back to Denver.
