Many of my friends and acquaintances have gone to Skywest. The big draw is that for a lot of them, they are from Utah and/or want to live there. In recent months, several of my close friends have all gone to Skywest after working as CFIs at a certain school in Arizona, so they're getting that tuition reimbursement. Some of those guys are single so they live at home and commute to their base (which, based on some of the reserve shenanigans, means they sometimes end up all over the place).
But ignoring aspects like wanting to live in a particular base or get a tuition reimbursement, I can't help but think they all go there (and put up with everything) simply because they don't know any better. If you don't know anyone who has worked there for more than a year or two, and you don't read forums like this (with a grain of salt, of course), and you don't compare QOL at all other carriers, they have nothing to compare it to. They get assigned ORD and hope to get SLC some day, they just slough through reserve and everything else, because this is their first real job. Just another reason why I wish we would restrict newhire voting eligibility...even further beyond the completion of IOE. |
Thanks everyone for the replies and pm’s. On this last bid round, how long would it take to hold a line in DENor MSP in the CRJ?

directly from
Federal Register
/ Vol. 78, No. 43 / Tuesday, March 5, 2013 / Rules and Regulations "During a rest period, a crewmember must be free from all restraint by the certificate holder. If a crewmember is required to do something by the certificate holder, then that crewmember is not free from all restraint, and that crewmember is not on a valid rest period. Accordingly, a certificate holder cannot require a flightcrew member to perform any tasks during a rest period, including tasks such as checking the schedule/calendar, checking a text message, or checking an email message. However, if a flightcrew member performs a task of his/her own volition without being required to perform the task by the certificate holder, then that task is not a restraint imposed by the certificate holder. Thus, it is permissible for a flightcrew member to voluntarily decide to check the schedule/calendar during his or her rest period. We emphasize, however, that a flightcrew member’s decision to perform a task during a rest period must be entirely voluntary." By the way.....I got this directly from the SWOL Info center under 117 docs. |
Brining this thread back… how are reserve rules currently? Good info to a degree in this thread, but it’s all 5 years old. Any idea on how long to hold an ERJ line in ORD, or some other junior ERJ base?

Reserve at Skywest is a nightmare now. Thankfully I am not reserve but I know people who are and the new reserve rules are completely destroying their QOL.
What you keep reading about is likely in reference to the new stunt the company has started pulling which is assigning trips to people outside of their reserve period. So if you are scheduled 9 am- 9 pm reserve, ordinarily the earliest you would have to answer your phone would be 9 am, receive a 2 hour call out, and report at 11 am. Now that time means absolutely nothing. They have been giving 5 am report times to those guys and considering them “automatically notified”. This is terrible for commuters who would ordinarily be able to commute in before 9 am but now have to come the night before, lose a day off and pay for a hotel. |
