Initial training hotel at SLC
 

Has anyone gone through initial ground school at SLC?
Are the rooms a normal hotel setup (one room, two beds) or a suite set up (two rooms, one common area)?

Would you recommend single occupancy?
I.E. roommate has a nasty sim schedule that is totally opposite of yours or something, would that be a massive PITA?

Your roommate might be your sim partner. I think mine is in Denver; he was for CTP and we are roommates again. Not enough captains for all us FOs so we’ll train together as FOs.

The CTP email stated that your roommate is your preselected CTP partner. I believe the ground training/sim stuff after CTP is a different story.

rooms are ok. it depends on the hotel. your roommate for ctp is your sim partner, once you go to initial you will have a new roommate for indoc and systems. for sims they put me in a room with my sim partner which was a good deal.

It’s a suite type setup....there’s one bedroom then where the couch would be in the common area, there’s another bed. Works out well since you both have your own space and you normally get up around the same time for ground school.

You choose sim partners in ground school, so you could have a different sim partner/roommate for sim.

How is SkyWest the largest regional but they can't afford single occupancy rooms? I seriously don't get it.

Because thats a lot of rooms and the hotels don’t want to or can’t comit to that many rooms... especially around now in SLC. The Sundance film festival is about to start... if we only had 800 pilots and hired 10-20 a month like Compass/Horizon then we probably would. 130 NH’s for January... and 100+ for the forseable future... then add yearly CQ, and FA’s. They are running 50 NH’s every week... our size hinders us in hotel capacity...but you do get your own room during SIM (slc/den)then forever thereafter ... i could tell you that when i started. No hotels and no pay tell “after” ioe, and you had to buy your own charts and uniform....

This thread blows my mind! Skywest should be ashamed to even operate like this. Couldn’t imagine FaceTime with the family.... and the new roommate! How do they handle male/female sim partners?

It has nothing to do with affordability. It's about the limited number of rooms for each class coming to training. They like to keep everybody fairly close to the sim and training facilities to make it easier to get to class. Plus, SLC hotels fill up fast this time of year. If students were scattered all over the Wasatch front in ten different hotels, they would constantly have issues with transportation, traffic, group study, and other things along those lines.

Skywest has been successful for 46 years. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Well, it is a suite, and you have 'your own room' as in you have a bed and a closed door. So what ever you have to do behind closed doors is up to you.

But I digress.Honestly, it could be good for others. Make a new friend and talk to someone else about how the class was going for them and ask each other questions.

Many females end up with their own room of there are an odd number of females in the class. They don’t room males and females together. If there’s an odd number of males, someone will get their own room.

I know for a fact it has everything to do with money, this is one way the training dept. saves cash. BTW if you end up in ATL for sim you highly likely will be in a bed next to another bed with some dude you barely know.

There are two parts to this situation that was told directly to a sim instructors meeting when brought up:

First, it's money, SKW can get double rooms sometimes far less than 2 separate rooms, and SKW is usually the only customer for such. Pure and simple it's money, even during the Olympics we found cheap rooms, sometimes 20 miles away, and even then sometimes people shared beds. Paying for a separate room on your own is not always an available option. There been more than one that have quit because of it, I guess some people like to be treated like a professional adult? If I want to make friends with a class mate, I'll do it over a beer not running around in my room in my underwear.

Second, SKW likes to "test the waters" with people. They know they can't do it to already established employees even though they tried when we had to go to Berlin for sims. They want to see that you will tolerate being treated the way they want to treat you with out back pressure. If you resist it YOU WILL BE NOTED as "uncooperative" and "bad attitude". If you don't have any issues through training it won't be a factor, but if you do they will be less likely to work with you.

Capitulate to graduate, or in other words, surrender your self respect so SKW gets a known commodity.

Trust me, the double bunking is very demeaning, but it nothing to how insulting it is to be on reserve here.

Not complaining or complimenting, but logically ... if the number of rooms was the issue, how is it that when sims happen, suddenly everyone gets a single?

Delta doesn’t even pay for hotels. The fact of the matter is, why would OO change this?

The line pilots aren’t going to petition for this, because honestly we all did it. This clearly doesn’t affect recruiting, so the company isn’t going to do it either.

This has nothing to do with anything else but “they get away with it”. The rest are just dumb excuses (not enough hotel rooms etc.)

The recruiting department is very data driven and tries to understand why people are not joining OO who have an offer. Double occupancy doesn’t even make the list.

I just left a job working for some of the cheapest people on the planet. They would not hesitate to put us in the roach motel vs. the hilton if it saved them even a single dollar, but even there we got our own rooms.

It's a suite that has one bedroom, the other "bedroom" is where the living room would normally be, so one person does not get privacy. I wouldn't be opposed to being in a hotel room suite with another training pilot if we both had our own separate rooms.

Agreed. 2 bedrooms is just fine, but the other arrangement means the other person may need a glass of milk or a hot picket in the middle of the night lol. Not cool but it is what it is

They don't understand why people are not joining OO?? What are you on? Do you even realize how many pilots we are hiring every month? They don't have to understand why they aren't coming here, because they are coming here.

OK - let’s make sure you read this slowly - one step at a time:

- plenty of people are joining OO
- but not all that have an offer come to OO - yes - shocking I know
- of those that decide to go elsewhere for whatever reason, none made that decision because of double occupancy.
- recruiting collects this data and has concluded that double occupancy is not a show stopper

They’re also leaving here or not making it to the line in record numbers, why?

I can tell you the training rate failure % hasn’t changed from historical numbers. The amount numerically is up do to more people going through training. But also a lot of military guys come for 3 months then get on a Major... hard to tell on the attrition report and not everyone is on Facebook posting there life after SkyWest.. Go look in the Envoy topics. The have similar high numbers of people leaving under the 1.5 years service mark..

Maybe you should talk with your boss about the training failure percentage, it's been slowly increasing (percentage wise) for the last 5 years, which he said means the department is doing exactly what it needs to. He said it rather proudly and a bit of smug.

When you take in that the bulk of systems training is with CBT's and thus self taught, all the less than a year FO's teaching class, brand new sim instructors-well? The simple correlation is there and the industry, the employment pool, and the feds are taking notice. Anybody that has been in the training department for more than 10 years will tell you the same thing.
