Default Making the Jump from 135

Looking for advise for those who have done similar.

Currently flying 135, copilot 70k a year, and knowing the end goal is major airline. 2.5 years in with company, about to upgrade but not sure if I should just take the pay hit and jump in with a 121.

Skywest is my first option due to ORD base being my biggest concern. Anyone else with similar situation have comments on QOL/Pay/career differences, specially Skywest related. Wondering if I should stick it out 135 build the PIC turbine and extra $, or jump ship and start the 121 career.

Thanks all, appreciate the insight.

121 all the way. ORD is super junior for both FO and CA

former part 135’er myself and I made the jump and never regretted it (even going to $22/hr). It’s not impossible to get on at the majors with no 121 experience, but they certainly seem to like it.

I made the jump to SkyWest from a corporate flight department. After getting some 121 time and some 121 PIC time, I received offers from a couple legacies and am now at my #1 choice. I definitely recommend it.

I'm headed there myself after a few years of the 135 life. Looking for the almighty Retirement and QOL improvements really. End of the day, if I don't like it after a few years, I can always go back to pop up trips to the Islands for 4 days, in January.

I'm also making the jump from 135. I'm leaving because I have aspirations of flying for a major one day, but I'm only logging 40-50 hours a month. I live in LA and would like to return, but understand LAX/SoCal bases to be very senior.

Approx how many block hours are reserve guys getting a month on the CRJ in LAX?

Best guess on how long I'd be on reserve on the CRJ in LAX?

Is it possible to get ORD out of training on the CRJ?

How long to hold a line on the CRJ in ORD?

Long time.... but you wouldn't even be able to get to the LAX base for at least 8-10 months. The newest FO at LAX was hired 5/18.

You can see the newest hire for all the bases on the OO site.

Yep! ORD/DTW are the usual initial bases for CRJ classes.

Not sure on that... I think hiring is starting in full swing again, so the numbers will probably move quickly as each class is fairly large from what I understand.

Thanks for the insight. I had previously been on the SkyWest website and was hoping some of that info was old. Do you know how many hours approximately reserves are flying in LAX on the CRJ. My priority is block time and upgrade. Just trying to get the shortest commute to my priorities.

I would say in LAX you'll probably not break guarantee(76 hours) very much. I know a lot of the flying is being taken by the 175.

Also for my 2 cents, west coast bases on the crj are very hit or miss, They could let in a few a month and then it could be zero for a year it just depends.

If you want to actually want to fly on the CRJ your best option is DTW or ORD. Lots of CRJ flying in those bases and you'll move up quickly

Are DFW and IAH still attainable in training? I should be reaching R-ATP mins in a few months and would like to end up somewhere in Texas if possible.
