Knows what requires a full readback and what doesn't. Avoids too-cool-for-school terminology.

And when you switch to a new frequency, instead of stepping all over someone else, listen up for a few seconds before talking. You think it would be common sense...

I see a lack of the following with new students these days, beginning in CTP.

1. Can’t talk on the radio properly. Listen to live ATC if you need help understanding what should be said and how.

2. A lack of understanding aerodynamics. Specifically what load factor is and how to manage it, how it effects you ect...

3. A lack of proper radio usage...

4. Lack of will power to not check the iPhone in class and in briefings.

5. Practical ways to discuss the different air speeds and how they interact throughout a flight. Meaning, they can rattle off the book definition, but lack the ability to translate that into a flight and real world application.

DO NOT study for CTP. Study for your ATP written.

That requires sciencey stuff. And math stuff.

You can get away with that at the regionals. But the bigs have rapidly achieved near zero tolerance, that will get you fired off probation about as quick as showing up drunk. People goof off on their phones for hours in cruise flight, but not in critical phases. Or on IOE.

Yes. If there's a speed discussed in airline training or used in the sim, be sure you understand what it means, the underlying theory, and when/how to use it. Screwing up reference speeds in a transport category aircraft can go horribly wrong very fast. Lazy CA's may not be paying attention, so you as FO need to recognize unrealistic (ie erroneous) speeds in the context of the operation being conducted.

You might block an emergency meow from a cat in distress.
