Default OO Strategically Invests in Southern Airways

Southern Airways Announces Strategic Minority Investment By SkyWest, New Alliance Between the Companies

Interesting. What's in it for OO?

“Putting a pilot pathway program in place with Southern enhances our pipeline of future Part 121 professional aviators.” -WS

It doesn't seem like our recruiting dept is hurting for applicants right now.. but what do I know.

SkyWest owned Scenic airlines back in the day .. Probably getting into the game with Southern express, before someone else does...

Interesting. SAE is a small outfit with just over 100 pilots.

I wonder if Southern acquiring Mokulele had any influence. What does this do to the Southern Airways ---> Mesa pathway?

OO mainline got so big that SGU needs a C-scale. United Express Express? Delta Connection Connection? You guys didn't give up scope in your contract, did you? Oh, wait.

Yeah but is skywest going to find their own caravan "FO" YouTube star to then pump out videos about how cool it is to be an airline pilot on the 208 at southern airways with a flow to mainline OO??? Right now I'm flying for Virtual Skywest on xplane and studying really hard but I for one would like a YouTube personality centered around skywest that I could watch during cruise flight at my computer that features the beautiful E175 of course no CRJs 🤢

Holding some equity is not the same as owning and operating.

I would think SGU wouldn't be tripping over themselves to operate another airline just yet... it took almost 15 years to get out of the ASA/XJT debacle.

Under the “mutually supportive” program, Southern Airways will provide cadets with 1,200 hours of flying second-in-command on the 35 Cessna Caravans and Grand Caravans operated by its commuter carriers—Southern Airways Express and recently acquired Mokulele Airlines—and then 600 hours more as pilot-in-command, said Little. After accumulating 1,800 hours of experience, all of it on scheduled, two-pilot passenger services, each pilot cadet will transfer to SkyWest Airlines to become a first officer on regional jets.

Southern Airways will benefit from the program through its ability to offer a means for cadets to move quickly from the 250 hours of experience they formerly needed to qualify as air transport pilots in the U.S. to the 1,500 hours of piloting time the FAA now requires, said Little. Southern Airways gives each pilot 100 hours a month of flight time, offering an alternative to flying as instructors for as long as four years to build experience to 1,500 hours.

The program allows pilots to graduate to SkyWest after only 18 months. SkyWest will benefit both from a guaranteed flow of qualified pilots from Southern Airways and from the fact that all their experience will involve two-crew commercial aircraft.
Sounds like what OO was doing with Bountiful flight.. but this is an alternative for low time pilots that don't want to do the CFI thing.
Maybe we're seeing a lull in application numbers, who knows.

Interesting at the least.. I'd like to be a fly on the wall for these kinds of talks.

They should because xplane is so realistic just like flying the real plane and I do it on vatsim so it's accurate ATC
