HOT Rumors from XJT

Skywest doesn’t want 550s, which is just the CRJ type rating which about 2/3 of its pilots have (many of which are sitting around on VTO/CPTO/Reserve). Ignoring all its drawbacks and reasons for not wanting to operate them (over a dozen of which are our own aircraft), why would we want to acquire a new type and train people on it, when we keep declining interest in the 550 (which our guys are typed for) as we also keep transitioning guys to the 175? My money is on backroom deals to negotiate more 175 flying and financing 175s over the next few years. Why would we even think about aging 145s when we have a surplus of aging 200s that will do the same job?

United has said since the beginning of this mess that 50 seat flying will be significantly reduced, and so far they have shown that they weren’t bluffing. All of the 50 seat jets are getting old and were approaching the end of their service. A few of the XJT planes will go to CommutAir, the rest will be probably turned into beer cans. The big question is what size the legacies will be coming out of this, and what kind of shakedown that triggers at the regional level.
