Default SkyWest: Training Delays?

Hello, I have a class date at SkyWest for Jan 20th and was wondering if there were any training delays? How long does it take to go through the training? Is there a Captain shortage?

A friend of mine at SkyWest told me the current delay is about 9 weeks between Indoc and ground school. Since everyone is fat on FOs and short on captains it seems like this is going to continue across the board until everyone’s balanced somewhat on staffing.

Well the simple reality is this:

• We have waayyyyyy more FOs in the pipeline than the company actually needs (sorry...this should be no surprise to anyone)

• Training capacity is just getting back up to speed after all the forced CA upgrades. But -- with all FOs on property now being assigned an upgrade class date as soon as they hit 750-800 hours 121 time, a *significant* portion of training capacity is now being devoted to upgrades, for the foreseeable future. Most of those people will be doing short courses, but even the short course still requires a total of 12 procedures trainer + sim sessions, and there are only so many PT and sim instructors on property.

Bottom line, the age-old advice of "Go to whichever airline offers you the first class date" is as accurate today as it ever was. I feel for those who already resigned their previous jobs and are now being delayed from starting class here.

2/17 CTP and 2/27 ERJ Indoc delayed also

I would apply to Frontier’s F9 Cadet Program, as well as Allegiant as both are taking ATP mins and paying for CTPs.

I was offered a 12/12 CRJ class but declined because I wanted to stick it out for the ERJ. Welp, hindsight is 20/20.

I'm scheduled for atp-ctp on Jan 27th and a class date of Feb 6th. I haven't heard anything from Skywest about moving/cancelling these dates. Jan 27th is only 2 weeks away, if theyre going to cancel or push I wish they would tell me now.

Can't answer questions about delays getting started, but can talk about the current training footprint once started (I'm currently in ERJ training, FYI):

- Flew from CTP directly to indoc (I've heard there is now a bit of a break, maybe 2 weeks, between CTP and indoc)

- Had a 5 week break between indoc and systems ground school (paid the regular training rate of 65 hours per month, with access to travel benefits. I decided to spend some time travelling to Europe, essentially with free airfare).

- Systems ground is 2 weeks. I just completed ERJ Systems Validation test today, with a 5 day break before Procedures Training starts

- Procedures takes about a week, then anticipate another 4 day break prior to Maneuvers

- Maneuvers is scheduled to take another week, with a 2 day break at the end of the Maneuvers Validation

- 4 days for LOFT, culminating in the KV and the LOE

Overall my footprint (from CTP to my future scheduled checkride) is about 3 months. They frontload the breaks in training because its not as diminishing to your knowledge as it would be to have massive breaks between SIM sessions. Once you get to Systems and SIMs, they limit the break lengths to prevent you from losing skills or knowledge. Hopefully this is helpful info for you to get an idea of what to expect!

So, here's some more food for thought and a follow on question to see if it has gotten any better post LOE. I was a 12/28/21 new hire on the CRJ. Our class got through training in relatively quick time with most finishing in about 9 weeks. Then came the vacation as we sat for 4+ months waiting for IOE. I finished LOE on March 6th and didn't see my first trip with a LCA until July 17th. I never made it to the final line check because I saw the freight train coming and was lucky enough to be able to jump over to my preferred job with a large 135/91K company flying Challenger 300's and 350's in August and have zero regrets.

I'm still in contact with my classmates and there are some that are still sitting on reserve, while others have finally started seeing some composite lines awarded. Have one friend that is based out of IAH and he flew 8 hours in Nov and Dec combined, even with trying to chase as much open time as he could. With the number of lines shrinking across the system, expect to be on reserve for a long time after finishing training. The imbalance is very real.

Would love to know what the current LOE to IOE wait times look like and has the number of LCA's increased or are they all still leaving faster then the FAA will approve replacements?

Not trying to throw cold water on everyone's enthusiasm, but you need to go in with that info tucked into your back pocket and not be shocked about delays or even the amount of flying once you get out of training. SkyWest was/is a great company to work for and I believe they will come out of this turmoil better than the others. How long that takes is anyone's guess at this point.

Best of luck to all of you!

Default Waiting for a date...

Applied beginning of Oct. Emailed after 2 weeks to see if they got my application. Got an email for an interview within 2 days after that. Waited 5 weeks for an interview (end of Nov). 2.5 weeks for the offer. Still waiting for a class date. Upgrade eligible with fewer than 300 hrs. This is fantastically slow. Is this the current typical experience?
