I'll bid trips that come back to my base vs. never coming back in on the days I need off. I fondly remember a time when you used to be able to post those partial trips and have other pilots pick it up. I used to worry about what it would look like if I posted it then called in. I give other people a chance to see if it helps them at all. But with everyone maxed out, not many trips get picked up anymore.

You shouldn't have to get creative when you're only request is one specific day either way it didn't matter in the end.

Another option...FMLA. You need to take at least four consecutive days (could include scheduled days off), need a doctor to sign the form, but it completely blocks any and all pushback or repercussions. I think they cannot even count against your reliability score, per federal law "it never happened". You can do it as many times as you need, in 4-day increments, until you use up all your FMLA for the year. I'm 99% sure you can do the paperwork after the fact too.
But if it's a day off you know in advance you're going to need, golden days have always worked for me and we get five now.
As long as we're on this subject....word to the noobs, don't use travel bennies including JS, while out sick. Some airlines turn them off, although SKW does not. Problem is if somebody ever decided to care (they haven't yet but might soon), you left a paper trail indicating you weren't that sick after all. If you have to travel, buy a ticket on a non-affiliated airline.

Yeah be careful leaving a long paper trail leading up to a sick call...vacation fail, golden day fail, bid fail, attempt drop fail, post fail, then ask CP for the day off. If you call in sick after all of that somebody might notice. I suspect they're getting to the point where there will be pushback (later this year!). The company is seriously considering requiring a Doc's note from pilots...apparently this is due to a few folks going way over-the-top with sick calls, not the majority who very occasionally do what they gotta do.

It's the internet. He can say stuff like that if he wants, just like if he was at a bar with his buddies. No need to be so spring loaded.
Different story at work of course, but this isn't work. This one of those places where people come to let off steam after spending the work day dealing with stifling and frustrating policies and personalities.

Yes, no problem returning home when sick.
Emergency call also no problem traveling to deal with the emergency...but keep in mind that they can ask for details about the emergency. Might be an awkward conversation if you non-revved to Bangkok. Best save the emergency calls (which they're very accommodating about) for real emergencies.
