Military Leave (LOA) Questions; SkyWest
SkyWest Military Leave Questions
Question(s) for SkyWest Pilots concerning military leave:
Scenario (1): On military leave 30+ days
1. Travel benefits, will my family still be able to utilize them while I am overseas?
2. Travel benefits, will I still be able to utilize them while stateside? What about CASS?
3. If my seniority could have held a base while I am away, can I move to that base upon my return even if there is no current open/available for transfer?
4. Seniority does it freeze or does it stand while I am gone?
5. Upon return do you have priority to enter training if required? If one is not IOE complete, how soon can you return to work?

1. For 30 days you will retain travel benefits.
2. Stateside or overseas, it doesn't matter. 30 days. You will be removed from CASS after 30 days as well, but can keep it retained as long as you are in good communication with your Chief. (Skywest got burned by a couple of guys who said they were on leave, but weren't).
3. Short answer....no. However, I believe under USERA they have to give you the next available slot regardless of whether you are number one on the list or not. But I think someone junior to you had to have been awarded that base....not just that you could have held it.
4. Your seniority will continue as though you are here for 5 years of continuous mil leave.
5. Not sure exactly what your asking here. Were you completely qualified prior to mil leave? If so you can go 89 days without requiring anything. After that you will need 3 landings with a LCA. If you go 6 months without flying I think you will get some OE and a line check. If you go over 1 year you have to do a modified ground school, sim, OE and a line check. Skywest will accommodate this either individually if there are no classes available or possibly put you through a class if they are currently training.

#1 is really to bad, I agree. Would be great if my wife was not stuck with the kids while I was gone. It would be easier on her and make her happier if she could visit with her family while I am overseas.
I hate when people ruin things by taking advantage, sounds like that might be why this policy is in place?

My airline (not Skywest) turns off our pass benefits for any type of mil leave. I'm fighting the policy now and had ESGR involved. Hasn't gone anywhere yet and my airline is blaming United. Next step is the Labor Department but I'm hoping they change the policy before it comes to that. Does anyone have any similar stories or had to fight this before?
