Default SWA New Hire Training

With all the new hire's and all the questions we have, maybe a good thread to address training questions and experiences.

What items did you find most useful to prestudy before training?
How often were you able to make it home?
Bring a laptop, or will a tablet be fine?
Where are guys doing IOE?

Thanks

You will do all the same system videos that you have now, except now they will track your progress. I would still go through them bc you won't get much in the way of systems from the company. So the better you know it the easier it is when you get here. If you don't have time or just don't want to do it twice. Look at the hydraulics and the flight controls

Depends where you live and when your Oral is, but most people go 2-3 times. With that said your family can always come to you

They will give you and efb on day 2 so you can use that to study.

Not much to add to Mr Foolery's comments, went home every weekend til I started sims. Review the systems stuff, most/all of your training and learning will be on the line. Don't be afraid to fly with a check airman, I have averaged 1-2 trips a month with one them and my experience has been very positive. They like to teach more than evaluate. Welcome aboard and hope to see you on the line soon - helps my seniority!

Number one, take time to enjoy training and hanging with your class mates. We had some great times!

You will be required to do a few observation flights before you finish training. Knock them out early. If you time it right, after class you can do a quick round trip to AUS, HOU, or SAT and have time left for a couple of cold ones with your classmates (I drove home on days off where many in my class commuted via jumpseat and did the observations that way).

I memorized the flows and memory items before I went. That alone pretty much made training a vacation.

I was typed, but it was a decade earlier and I didn't remember anything about the airplane.

helps to do the videos ahead of time, though not required. helps also to be familiar with lims...and just start to get to know flows. but there is enough down time to catch up if no.

I had a 4 week old son at home, so I headed home every chance I got. 8 times in 2 months...though some times I was home for just a day.

You get the ipad the second day....don't really need a laptop if you can survive.

You select an IOE "base", close to your closest SW city...most of the guys got DH from home to that base.

If you're already typed, just show up cold. Otherwise, you're wasting personal time. Home every weekend, and every break during sims. Beer every nite. Don't make it harder than it is.
