Here is another thing that can help out--trading reserve blocks for trips.
One strategy I used during my first year was to put every reserve block into give away AND trip trade. I traded for almost any trip--because then I could either ELITT for something better, or at least have a schedule for that period when I was commuting.
I was fortunate to fly less than two months worth of reserve during my first year using that strategy.
It requires some patience and some faith...but it's feasible.
