I found the company issued headsets are just barely adequate. I used the same kind in a Citation, but I found the 737 to be much louder. I've since been using my 15 year old Bose X and keep the company set in my bag.

I've come across pilots using all kinds of Bose, DC, etc.

CA1900 08-02-2017 02:51 PM

I love my Clarity Aloft. A little chunky to carry in its case, but very comfortable to fly with.

Indyjetav8er 08-02-2017 02:55 PM

What about the uflymike. I called today and they are sched to be tso'd later this year

SWAPA has a deal with Bose for rebate of $125 for non-BT A20 and $150 for BT version. It's not tied to a merchant, so you can finance it through Amazon Prime interest-free for a year if you don't want to pay the full amount right away.

I got my rebate check just shy of 3 weeks after purchasing mine.

I have worn Bose headsets in a previous life on much longer legs in a similar noisy airplane.
The noise canceling can't be beat. You are in a cone of silence. The reason that I actually prefer the company provided headset at SWA is the Bose would give me a headache after about 2 hours. It is definitely a personal preference. If the clamp headset style doesn't bother you, it is absolutely worth it. I just can't get past the weight and pressure it puts on your head.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Bose X. I used those as well in a previous AF life and agree it would get uncomfortable after hours of flying. I'll just say the Bose A20s have never left me with that clamped feeling. They're expensive but the way I saw it was, I'll be on average using it 13+ days a month, so it's probably worth the investment. 3 years later, and I still have no regrets.

It was the A10. I know the 20 is a bit lighter. I agree that it is a quality piece of gear and Bose customer support is amazing. If I were to get another one, I would definitely buy from them.
I had my A10 refurbished and I swear it was a new one that they sent me. They offered a loaner in the meantime. Great quality, great people.
My headaches started with the old style D.C. Headset and I was hoping the Bose would cure it. It was marginally better, but I still couldn't quite get rid of it. It doesn't help that my head is a melon on a toothpick.

Ha. Yeah. I guess I have a bit of a pin head as I've never had a problem with A20s. Despite my somewhat narrow skull, the old school David Clarks, even with the "comfort kit" still felt like my head was in a vice after a few hours . Some people seem to like the new DC pro X's though. To the OP's question, Headsets are so highly subjective, no-one can really pick for you. Just dive in and see which one suits you the best. The most common that I've seen on the line, along with the company issued Telex, are the Bose A20s, DC Pro X (both have the Bluetooth feature) and a handful of Clarity Aloft.

I thought uflymike was ok now at swa? Heard you got rid of the TSO deal? true?

I believe the reason the uflymikes are OK now is because they can be TSO'd. But yes, several of us use them.

I called uflymike yesterday and they anticipate the Tso cert for the qc25 later this year. Can you use the qc15 non tso version

From what i know you do not need a tso headset unless its in your SOP and I only know of one carrier (cargo) that requires that. I could be wrong, im wrong 50% of the time.

There's history behind the TSO thing at SWA. I'll just leave it at that.

I thought the harmony mike was TSOd?

gipple 08-03-2017 02:02 PM

I use the ufly/QC15 set up. works great. Sweet for riding in the back without carrying another music rig. I have a brand new in the box QC15 For the day the original craps out. The ear cushions last about two years, but are cheap and simple to replace. There is plenty of notice when the battery is running down. It has never failed, unlike the call center Telex the company provided. (cough cough kick back) Lithium battery life is about six weeks.

CODs4ever 08-07-2017 05:07 AM

Are the company-issued the Telex 850 with ANR? I used the QC-25 with Harmony at my old job.

Not yet... I contacted them the other day and was told they don't know when it'll be done. I'm on the fence, just about ready to sell it and just get the A20. Wish I would've kept my older uflymike.

Stitches 08-10-2017 04:46 AM

For a commuter, the qc15/25 & UFM is the way to go. Works great upfront, pull the mike out and watch movies on your iPad or just sleep when commuting/DH in the back.

Some guys love the A20's, others say they're too heavy and squeeze your head. They are slightly quieter than the qc/UFM setup but I didn't think it was $500 better.

TerrainTerrain 08-10-2017 03:39 PM

So officially the new Uflymike harmony is not allowed at SWA? I know there was some type of battle over Uflymike there years ago, just wondering what is the scoop now? Thanks!

Southwest requires a headset that's TSO'd, and the Harmony isn't yet.

Stupid TSO rules. Or I'd be using my QT Halo.

If you guys have company headsets on the plane just use whatever headset you want then if a management/FAA type wants to ride along just use the ship set.

Exactly. Carry the telex and use what you want. The telex hardly takes up any space as a backup.

I’m planning on using my halo (keep 850 in bag). Do people really get caught up on TSO?

Some do. Mine was pre-TSO. All the writing is gone off the volume box. If anyone asks...it's TSO.

I have a HALO for my backup pair for when my Clarity Aloft need repairs -- to often. Need to send the Halo back to have the microphone gain turned down though. Way too much background noise when I have my intercom on.

I have the light speed Zulu 3 headset and its super comfy. The ANR is superb on it as well as the Bluetooth if you’re going to use it for GA flying too.

Skyward 10-06-2017 02:43 PM

What headset does the company issue?

Telex 850. They're so-so; if you get them in just the right spot, they'll do an adequate job of canceling the wind noise. I find any on-the-ear headset to be painful, so I don't use them, but they're standard issue. I use a Clarity Aloft and am very happy with it.

Careful. Zulu 3 isn’t TSO’d which is a requirement.

Funny.... Professional Pilot pays $100+ for sunglasses, earbuds, hair mouse (a year)... $300 for Luggage Works rollaboard to protect their underwear.... but scrimping on head clamps....
DC's are too heavy (to pack or if the company offered for extended wear)
I've owned and worn a variety of Telex... MEH... Stop trying to beat the system with non-TSO'd applications...
Hands down, Bose A20!
What's your hearing worth?

Not TSO'd yet, but another entry into the aviation microphone market.

https://nflightmic.com/

Anybody use this/seen one used?

TexasFlight 11-07-2017 04:42 AM

The fact that the Telex 850 is TSO'd and the new Uflymike isnt, is laughable. Lot of ways to skin the cat with headsets but I agree with what was alluded to above, it is money worth spending. After trying in-ear and on-ear headsets, I personally prefer over-the-ear. Especially in a loud airplane like the 73.
