Focus Cities

I have a question regarding the focus cities low-budget airlines have.

I am with the regionals now and heavily considering Southwest. Is it possible to live or be based at a focus city compared to a hub? I want to move back to the Tampa area and notice Tampa is a focus city for Southwest. If not, as of now I would have to wait until I was Orlando MCO based and drive from Tampa if that was my only option when the time came. I have realized wanting to live in Tampa is mostly a commute only option right now for the majors/legacy.

Thanks in advance

You would have lots of commute options from Tampa, and could hold pretty much any base except Atlanta within six months.

A bit unrelated, but DEN has been trending more senior these past few months, not letting any FOs transfer in. Last time I checked I think the Jr fo in domicile was at 9 months.

What do you mean by being based at a focus city?

Not saying that couldn't happen but it won't happen enough

It’s possible to live in any city, but not possible ATM to be based at anywhere other than a domicile (hub). If you live in TPA, your options are to drive to MCO or commute to HOU, BWI, ATL, etc.

Out in OAK, we have many piloits that drive from the SMF area. That is about the same distance/time as MCO-TPA.

Unfortunately SMF to OAK driving time can be radically different if you hit the wrong time of day...I.e. double.

I fly only PM’s and it’s never taken me more than 1:45 coming or going.

AM’s on the other hand would be a completely different story.
