Still unclear about the strategic rationale for a new fleet type? Read the rationale provided by your management:

Pretty well stated. Not saying it is going to happen - but at least there is an acknowledgment that the 737NG/MAX is not suited for every route and that there are likely many routes out there that should be served by SWA that economically can’t be served today. WestJet switched from an all 737 fleet and SWA can too.

Route optimization. The a220 out performs max on cost and better suited for certain markets. Furthermore it’s risk mitigation, what if max continues to have issues or the public doesn’t fully forget? It would be irresponsible of management to not have a close look at other options since right now our next probably 15-20 year fleet plan relies on a plane that crashed twice and is grounded

Max 7 can go nonstop to HI. Max also has legs to Panama...Copa doing it now. I’m sure they’ve got everything laid out to the DEN Airport Authority to leverage as many gates as possible.

I could see them pulling the trigger on another airline before adding another fleet type in house.

We did buy 4 more Max sims a couple months back...and our expanded training center is due to open soon and I heard we asked to have the work on our new Denver terminal expedited.
