I'm planning on getting my SWA app in this window for FO (getting the app reviewed by Cage this week - I already have apps in at the other majors since Dec/Jan). I was also thinking of applying to their Flight Crew Training Instructor position as another option/backup, because I'm qualified. I also don't want to be out of work in May when my terminal is done. Thoughts on this being a good/bad idea? Not sure how the company would view it. I would not want to do it if it compromises my chances at FO.

From my limited knowledge, if you are hired on as an instructor you have a three year commitment before you could be considered for hire as a SWA fo.

I am not sure if it's a problem now, but I can say that it has not been an issue in the past.

SW has lots of "internals" (folks that move from one employee group to another, including into the pilot group). I have flown with people that have started as ops agents, ramp guys, instructors and even one that started as a sky cap!

I am sure that your record as a SW employee will play into their willingness to hire you as a pilot, which could be good or bad.

FWIW, I've flown with at least half a dozen folks who made the jump from the schoolhouse to the cockpit over the years, and they're all great pilots/folks.

This. I think instructor is a pretty raw deal if you want to more over to being an FO. You start at the bottom of the FO list (you might keep longevity thou?), you have interview just like someone off the street would, and I'm heard rumors that they've been slow about releasing instructors to class.

It sounds like you are qualified to be a First Officer. I would apply everywhere, and line up the best 121 job you can for May/June (regional with base in your city if it comes to that). You want to be in flying position and current to make yourself attractive Southwest and legacy airlines.

When you transfer between groups at SWA the only longevity you keep is for vacation purposes and not pay. Your longevity for pay will be based on your date if hire as a Pilot, as will your seniority.

Unless you are absolutely dead set on working for SWA and being based in Dallas, I’d recommend not applying for an instructor position.

if you don’t get an interview at SWA get some 121 time. Your path to swa FO will be MUCH quicker with mil + 121 time than it would be as a sim IP and you’ll likely have several offers to choose from.
