Recently completed FO leadership training. Network planning came in and said red eyes are a great potential, but mainly to connect Hawaii with east coast. So red eye from Hawaii to CA, then connect with existing routes to east coast. Of course, potential to do more from there, but the immediate red eye flying will be Hawaii - CA.
I wouldn't be holding my breath.....
Maybe ask your SWAPA rep what he thinks about the possibility of red eye flying. From anywhere

Junior Base?
Tech debt aside, red eyes would be good for the pilot group whether you want to fly them or not.
1. More upgrades, vacancies etc.
2. If built as standalone pairings they are commutable
3. Absorbs some of the overstaffing
4. Increases aircraft utilization
5. Improves profit sharing
6. Makes the airline more desirable to business travelers
7. More commute options for pilots who live East but are stuck in a west coast base.

Agree on all points.
I talked to an actual human from network planning over the summer and they said red eyes are a minimum two year project due to technology, operations, and planning concerns. She said they are a thing in the puzzle palace and will eventually happen but she doesn't know when they will be a thing in the real world.
I personally have done enough flying on that side of the clock to never want to do it again, but I welcome it as an option for our little operation. Increased organic aircraft utilization and block hours are a good thing no matter how you slice it.

It's kind of embarrassing that technology is their reason and it'll take 2 years!!!?! Feels like our own Y2K bug. What kind of Apollo era supercomputer are they using?!

Now? Impossible for a new hire. Until the classes start (the earliest scheduled in July, and that may change depending on MAX), there'll be no movement throughout the system. DEN has been very senior for FOs, and there's a line of junior FOs waiting to get in. Having said that, it may change completely with MAX return and the new gates in terminal C. Depending how many gates we will get (up to 16 available), DEN may see new hires (maybe). For now, however, I would not count on getting DEN for 1year + after training, and that's optimistic.

some people just got it after ~18months, but in the same bid there were some 9 month people who got in. Going forward the base is going to expand a lot with the 16 new gates (finish date in 2022)...although we need the MAX back to really get things going.
Short answer - no one knows how long it'll take for someone in training right now

I wouldn’t plan on getting hired and seeing DEN in 2020. With the Max back and if we get all 16 gates (base is supposed to nearly double in size to be biggest in the company). Currently 500 FO’s, so things will start to move fast (hopefully).

we tend to talk abut the impossibility of things that other places do routinely and have great success.
