Schedule Changes

I know the company is in a jam when it comes to staffing. However, the schedule changes in the last week are exasperating their challenges. Even if I am getting double time, I pick a trip up with the thought of how it is going to fit into my personal life. I assume the trip that I pick up is going to resemble some remote facsimile to what I committed to both in terms of total hours of flying, sleep schedule, arrival time at my home base, etc.

if you pick up in the current circumstance, you may as well as be a reserve. Your trip will not resemble in any fashion what you commit to. AM will turn PM and vice versa, you will likely fly 50% more (screwing up future flying), you will almost assuredly return to your home base many hours past your your scheduled time and you will likely get your sleep pattern screwed up (regardless of what it is). Oh - and there is even a reasonable chance you will get JA’d.

We can blame Covid, Biden for his lack of foresight, the company for not hiring sooner, or the tooth fairy, as far as I am concerned. These schedule changes on picked up flying need to stop and fast or we won’t have anyone picking up and we will be canceling hundreds more flights than we already are.

While all legal, bad behavior has consequences. I think the consequences are going to even more cancelled flights, less guys flying, and a need to hire even more pilots than should be required and unfortunately less income for the pilot that won’t pick up any more.

Call Scheduling, press 1, then 2, and say "Hello, this is <state your name and employee number>. Please mark me as fatigued. Thank you. We'll talk again soon." Problem solved. And guess what? You don't even have to follow their recovery plan if you're not up for it either.

The company brags on having the industry-leading fatigue call policy. Remember, being tired/fatigued will NEVER be an acceptable excuse should you ever find yourself in the jam. They will point to the "industry-leading" fatigue policy and you'll be SOL.

Even if you fly your line awarded trip you are on reserve.

Smooth at FL450 01-08-2022 09:08 AM

Bait n switch on open time trips is not new or unique to the current environment.

at6d 01-08-2022 09:46 AM

Just had a full first day of a four day cancel for tomorrow. Check your boards, LOL.

ZapBrannigan 01-08-2022 10:11 AM

You use all of your seniority to bid on a trip, a line, etc... and with the click of a button they can take that seniority away from you and assign whatever they like.

It's a real problem... for us. They don't see it that way. As with most things around here it's "well you got paid premium for it didn't you?"

Money can't fix broken promises.

RJSAviator76 01-08-2022 10:13 AM

It’s 2021, and seniority today is systemically racist and unfair. /sarcasm

I don’t commute or really bid overnights in specific places. I want to make $ at work so don’t care if they screw with me. Should be a box to check though in case you’re the opposite and want to be left alone….”opt out of reroutes or something”

I definitely agree with that.

Amen. Maximum dollars while at work. That’s why I go to work. I seriously hope there will be an option to sign up for extra flying, reroutes, JA etc. in contract 2025.

that's my mantra as well but the only thing our senority is good for is days of the week off, not total days off a month, and overnights.
As for the company to be able to Jack around your schedule at will senority is worthless after 80% in base not including vacation. That's a completely different argument.
I like spirits rule that you cannot get re routed unless you agree. Of course pay me way more as well.

Especially when you end up working significantly more than you bid for, and get paid the same.

Bonus points for the ridiculous, fatigue inducing (negating the PP) circadian shifts.

Oh, and even more points for JA's into your day "off", that aren't, and end up paying 6.5 for working your day "off" at "double time". I've lost count of the number of those I got last year.

I thought all you have to do on your day off was not answer the phone.

That works great when you're at home. Not so great when you're trapped in the vortex and they (purposely, IMHO) route you into an unscheduled layover on your last day of work, with no way to get back to domicile until the next day.

A rescheduled Pilot must be rescheduled to return to his domicile
(RTD) no later than the End of the Original Trip Hour
Period (EOTHP) +4 hours. Flying may not be added to the
end of a scheduled or rescheduled trip that would result in
the pilot returning to domicile following the EOTHP. (Prevent
assignment of open time via reschedule, e.g. no turns
added on last day unless the turn was part of the original
reassignment.)

NVM into the next day, how is it possible that that an airline as old as I am does not have that, but NK does?

Edit: and I have had to call out because my SO got hosed, luckily our contract allows for that too.

Don’t forget the option of putting your next-day JA trip into giveaway. It’s helped me out a couple of times now.

Apparently, nobody is willing to work for "double time" that pays 6.5.

Just an FYI for you all - if you're working this weekend and don't want additional flying, get a GDO on your board. The operation looks like it could get a little crazy!

You can’t unspell MOU without JA.

ZapBrannigan 04-02-2022 07:19 PM

Tons of conspicuously easy trips in open time tonight... turns or one leg and deadhead home, going at VPF.

I'd bid on some if I thought I would fly those legs and not get rerouted into multiple days of online reserve.

No kidding. This place has mastered the meaning of Bait and Switch .

Better pack for five days on that turn. Or be tired when you get back.

Yeah, and I probably would have bit on it to be honest if I didn’t start hearing rumors of reroutes, JAs, extensions, and hotel rooms being unavailable for crews. Decided it was a good weekend to just stay at home and putter around the house instead.

I just showed up for my Detroit and Cleveland 3 day. No changes. Everything on time. I have decided that I am just a calming influence on the airline. Most of my recent trips have had zero changes.

Lol, I they sent me TO Florida... only had a 3 hour delay leaving FLL... I mean, I was sure It was gonna CX.

Was in MCO. For sure thought we would cancel. Didn’t. Hmm.

BIGRIG 04-03-2022 08:43 PM

Hey guys I just want you to know, we have new hires on their first trip off IOE out there last night. Dudes waiting for hotels that scheduling never assigned. If you’re out there and you see a guy sitting by himself, check and see if he’s a new guy. He might not know that we’ve been authorized to get our own hotels. Nor may he be able to afford the hit on first year pay. If you have the means, please help our new hires out. They may be out there tonight. If we don’t look out for each other, nobody else will.

Thats actually not a bad idea. Good looking out.

Ive learned to just take care of yourself (and others) during the good ol fashioned meltdowns...

Yeah, unfortunately mine too. I hate it when my trips stay on track. Less lucrative…

As a new guy a few weeks off IOE, I really appreciate this!

And beers and dinner if you can. Met a new FO in the bar awhile ago, Captain was a slam clicker. I was on 5th year pay, bought his dinner and drinks, and said welcome aboard. We are what we make of this place, as I was/am grateful for all the Captains that take care of beer tabs on the road.
