I like the training center.

Sure, it looks like a bunch of I love me walls, but I enjoy the stuff from the peeps who flew at SWA in the 70s and 80s just as much as I like looking at the NASA stuff and U2 space suits and blues and thunder chickens swag. It’s all cool history and reflects well on who we are and where we collectively came from.

I’ve flown with some intolerable mil peeps and some intolerable civilians. Neither background has a monopoly on douchebaggery. 99% of the peeps I fly with are awesome and that’s all I really care about.

Agreed. We all had our own journey to get here. I enjoy 99.9% of the people I fly with here regardless of their path. It’s just strange that some feel the need to “rib” people for their particular life story. It’s not so much about thin or thick skin, it’s merely an observation.

Anyway. How about the candidate pool?

At least your were in a respectable organization! How many crayons did you eat per day? It’s always a good day when the Marines are here.

Not too many…only liked the red and yellow ones (cherry and lemon are the best).

This sums it up very well

I tend to stay away from commenting on here. And I don’t care if people have different opinions, but it just seemed like a new level for him. It’s the same thing as other pilots commenting on politics, and getting a reaction from you or Zap on FB or the Forum. I don’t care that you vote left, or where you went to school, or what you did before SWA. It’s all good. Let’s have a good trip, let’s treat people with respect, and not cause any unnecessary drama. Zap usually follows that line of thinking, and so I just found it surprising he went there with a specific stereotype. He was just joking, but that’s what every pilot says when he goes off on a tangent on the forum.

We get it. You weren’t offended by The Zoo comment. But, just to be clear, can you confirm for a third time?

I don’t want to sound harsh but you kind of brought this on yourself. Now I wasn’t a fighter pilot, just an enlisted Marine. To understand the military mindset is an impossibility for a civilian. Your world is different than ours. Perhaps if you ever experienced true self sacrifice, real discomfort and had your life threatened for the safety and rights of others, and learned real brotherhood you’d get it. And no, frats don’t count. But I guess its just easier to make fun of others. A little kidding around is fine and even enjoyed, but the disparaging attitude from some is just offputting.

As someone who flew in a foreign NATO Air Force, I can answer in the affirmative to all of that bro code fraternity bs. I can also say the hero-worship of the military in the United States is a uniquely weird cultural phenomenon. It’s similar to what you would see in the Soviet Union, except it self generates and people actually believe it’s not state propaganda.

American military members identify as an astronaut on their way to the asteroid to save earth.

It definitely surfaced around the time of the Gulf War for me (I was still in high school). Perhaps as a way to make things right for Vets after Viet Nam, or at least the way they were treated. Sometimes it can go too far, but for me it’s still something to be respected.

I respect all our service members, and also those who served alongside them as Allies.
