Didn't the pilots complain for years and get the company to cave and allow this new jacket?
I'm not wild about how they look and won't be buying one. The leather jacket, when properly sized and zipped up, looks good.
Unfortunately, plenty of guys at all airlines who don't wear the proper size of various uniform items. Giant baggy shirts, pants that bunch up around the ankles, yellow/stained shirts, thick rubber-soled shoes. My buddies with jobs outside the industry don't dress like that - why do we?

Sweet touch to have the collar in the up position ala 1980's preppy members only fashion. And the name tag needs to see a doctor because it's been more than four hours in the erect position. Just another cut to the profession of airline pilot.

In the private sector we now have "business casual" and Hawaiian shirt Fridays. Doctors and nurses wear scrubs 24/7. The military, cops and firemen all wear BDU's. The days of the Pan Am Clipper pilot are long gone. They were pretty awesome, but everyone has moved on... not just pilots.
Version 1.0 of the lightweight jacket aint perfect, but it's a nice option to have in the tool kit. Especially for commuters who don't want to have two carry on bags... one roller and one 20lb side of beef/leather jacket.
Clean, pressed and properly fitted shirt/pants, as well as shined shoes and being well groomed are what really make the difference.
Feel free to speak badly about my mother now.

My $8 all black jacket from target is awesome.
On another note, I had a captain tell me that the company wants the work groups to think SWA is still a little upstart Texas airline so that they keep sacrificing a la 1970's fuel purchasing. This mindset keeps people from complaining about some of the conditions we work under. People forget that SWA is an industry leading airline sometimes. That being said, perhaps if we want the company to act like we're one of the big four, we as a pilot group should present ourselves like we're one of the big four.
And we don't have to change our hard-work attitude just because we're a bit dressed up.
How about single breasted blazer no tie....
