Leather Jacket

I know this has been brought up previously in other threads, but I can't seem to find the info...
Goatskin vs. Calfskin, which is better??

The one you have to pay 100 dollars more for. :)

Goatskin is more durable and has a grainy looking leather. Calfskin is softer with a smoother texture. It will look nicer, but the durability is not as good.

You can always tell when you're flying with a guy with a goatskin jacket, you can smell him while he is still on the jetbridge.

I had a goatskin back in the day at the regionals and have a calfskin now. Night and day, my calfskin is 4 years old now and is just as durable as day 1.

Funny, I asked the same question a few months ago and the overwhelming response was "Get the goatskin." So that's what I did. Still haven't received it yet.

My last (current) Perronne took about 4-5 months to get to me. Hence why I'm ordering now.... Going Calfskin, if it's nicer, I'll do it. Less durable; we get a new one every 3 years, right??

It's every 72 months. You can get reimbursed for the first one at 36 months. I have goat. It's 11 years old and I'm still trying to break it in. I would go goat.

I've now met my quota for learning something new.... And now am back to my original dilemma.....

This month I bought my kids mid-term new shoes for school instead of a leather jacket. I'm sure I'll get around to it sooner or later, and I sure feel guilty about it for 3-4 days a month except for December when I didn't think about it at all for some reason.

(haha oh now I'm sad again)

OneEyedMonster 02-26-2017 09:32 PM

I love the discussion.

Goat skin sucks...thats plain and simple..haha

"Hey Steve, nice car. Yeah, I opted to get the goat skin leather put in"

"Hey, thats a nice bag you have.." "Oh yeah, its goat"

"This year I got my wife a beautiful goat skin jacket. Goat, as in "greatest of all time"..so you know its good"

---things never said, ever.

If you can swing it. Call Peronne directly and pay with your own credit card. Use one with points/cash back. They will ship it right to your door within 2 weeks. Then expense the company. Spirit will reimburse you in 90 days.

If you order through Spirit. The will not pay Perronne for 90 days. Perronne won't make the jacket till they get paid. That's why it takes so long.

Or go with Pops leather and get a custom made leather jacket made and sent to you within a week.

I was in Incirlik and had a leather jacket made at Pops. They started it right while I was watching, then I left to get dinner. After my sock was chopped in half (those who have been to Turkey will know what I mean), I came back to Pops, jacket done.

Great place, just maybe not realistic for a Spirit jacket.

Why not realistic? I have one, know many that do. Did we defy reality?;)

Not realistic to travel to Pops to get a Spirit jacket, I'm sure it's easy to do online.

Haha...yeah, got ya.

Yeah, I did mine online and took some measurements that they needed and sent it in. You had to tell them that Spirit does wings and not the velcro and give them the spacing for the holes. I really love the leather jacket they made and will be curious to compare it to the free Perrone one I will get at 72 months. Pops has the zip out liner too which is nice for those in-between trips with weather.

dfwflyboy 02-27-2017 06:35 PM

I think at 72 months you only get the Goat with no liner. (cheapest option obviously) And they'll only reimburse you for the Goat price, even if you bought calfskin and liner.

This is 100% correct...

At 36 months they'll reimburse you the amount of the Perrone goat, its like $316. And at 72m months, a free goat!

Im guessing ill get my free goat at 72 months and sell that bad boy on ebay for $150, like I currently do with my 18 month uniform allowance.
