Question ORD Growth, Future Plans

Anyone have any info on projected growth for Chicago-O’Hare? Additional gates, additional growth? Also, anyone have any word on what Spirit’s plans are with the O’Hare 21 project? Moving to T5?

Word on the street is we'll be moving to Terminal 5 once all the construction is done. That should get us a few additional gates and enable growth in ORD. Until then, still somewhat gate limited.

Also for new hire purposes, ORD isn't ultra-junior but is still relatively quick to hold, maybe 1-3 months historically. Covid paused everything, but the vacancy that just closed had more Chicago openings.

What would be a realistic timeframe to hold a line in ORD?

With continuous hiring, I suspect anywhere from 2-3 months (bids) maybe even less.

Back in 2019 it took me 4 months, but that was when we were only hiring 6 a month. Then it blew up and hired 64+ a month and got it.

Again, we are hiring close to 400 or more this year. It won’t take that long.

As the MCDU post indicated, you would have to actually be in training and HAVE a seniority number, even if your type rating wasn’t complete. NK is hiring enough that the majority of new hires will likely have their base of choice before actually getting done with OE. Of course, that’s to be low man on the totem pole on reserve there. The real seniority issue will be where you can most quickly hold a line, since more senior people from other bases can still bid in above you. That won’t displace you, but it will slow your progression to lineholder.

But if you are coming in from a regional, by comparison it’s all going to be good regardless - at least once you get off first year pay.

You’ll move up quick as an FO, probably only spend a handful of months on reserve once they’re hiring aggressively. Reserve isn’t bad at all if you live in base. Commuting to reserve is a nightmare no matter where you are unless you like sitting around in crashpads or hotels.
