Not to sound crass, but that is one of the dumbest ideas I’ve heard. So I’m supposed to adjust my budget as a captain, 15-20% ($50,000-$60,000) so I can keep you as a junior guy employed?
Kind of have to agree that sounds comical as 100% of my pre-tax income here is less than your 15-20% paycut:rolleyes: I do respect seniority though. You earned that paycheck and one day I will too:D
In the mean time, sure would be nice to keep my house this winter though

Unfortunately, no amount of cuts would change that fate. Plenty of spirit pilots have seen this show before either here or at another company. History should be the guide.

Concessions have never saved any jobs nor prevented a company from filing chapter 11. If they need it that badly they’ll go through bankruptcy to get it. Being furloughed sucks, I get it, I’ve been there. That being said, pay cuts will not prevent or lessen furloughs.

I know it sounds bad, but it’s the truth and I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’ve been there, you want to believe it’s not happening, you want to think at the last minute that things will change and there is no way it will happen, then it’s here and it does happen. The best advice I can give is to have your finances in order. Flying isn’t the only job out there. If you need to replace 1st year pay, it’s not hard to find a job to at least get by on. Don’t blame me because of my position. I was in that same position before trying to replace $150k job.
This place is in survival mode. I don’t think any of our jobs are completely safe. We don’t know what the future holds, a merger, bankruptcy, downgrades management tactics. I’ll say it again, this place does not care and will be looking to extract anything it can from this group. Ignore their scare tactics.

For the record I assumed we were talking about taking VILs, not concessions :D

I don’t see them offering long term VILs doesn’t benefit them in anyway. We will get furloughed the question will be 6 months or greater. I believe they have to tell you whether it will be less or greater than 6 months.

they don’t have to tell you for how long.

also a senior CA VIL saves more than first year pay and benefits. VILs they can dictate what bases and seats they ask for. Furlough and the displacements happen and they have to pay for moves and right seat qual for downgrades.

now obviously as first year pilots roll in to second year pay those numbers start to change a bit where a senior pilot pay isn’t changing much. So if longer term the furlough does save more than the VIL. Moves get pricey fast though.

To compare what is happening today to the past is short sighted or even ignorant. This is a health crisis that has created an economic crisis. The quicker the health crisis is solved the sooner we will see a rebound. Previous furloughs in this industry were largely a result of bad management, or deep economic woes. Even today, as we speak, the airlines are in a strong position financially.
This is a very unique beast and simply quoting from past labor mantras isn't truly looking at the current landscape.

The crisis is different. How the company uses the crisis to try and manipulate work groups into concessions will be similar as in the past.

Mods, please lock this thread based on idiots negotiating publicly for something hypothetical and overall stupidity. Apparently nothing was learned during our last CBA negotiations. Thanks.
