Not much to discuss. Big bird flew into the engine on takeoff, crew aborted below v1, passengers evacuated... Glad no one was seriously hurt and the dog made it out ok. Looks like everyone did their job well.

Rocinante 10-02-2021 10:10 PM

Cringing at everyone going for their bags.

What kind of a dog was it?

Was the evac ordered from the cockpit or uncommanded?

Cockpit. You can hear the evac siren come on before it’s commanded, just like the checklist

Our Evac switch is set to CA position only

Excellent job on the crew! I'm sure the media won't even acknowledge them since that isn't what sells clicks. Terrible job on the pax. People grabbing bags and inciting panic; I'm sure none of them even listened to the safety demo...

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I was in a group of paid volunteers - all college students - doing an evacuation test to help certify a new aircraft. The first two run throughs - the day before we did it for the FAA guys - looked a lot like that.

What you see is probably pretty close to what you are going to get. I wouldn’t expect anything a whole lot better.

Maybe in future aircraft the crew will be able to lock the overhead bins from the FA station to prevent this kind of crap.

Then you will have some PAX who will be fighting and trying to pry open the bins.

May take an electric fence shock to keep them from working to get them open. Or is that politically incorrect?

Thunder Rooster 10-03-2021 10:20 AM

How did the rear slide blow like that in the engines were shut down?

Very true. Not sure why I always expect any sort of order lol.

BobbyLeeSwagger 10-03-2021 12:57 PM

Nice job, crew. Glad everyone is ok

LNL76 10-03-2021 01:06 PM

Shock collars!

Fah2 10-03-2021 02:08 PM

Apparently a fairly recent upgrade and a newer hire FO, I would say very well executed between them.

Great job to the flight attendants who I heard were taking bags from some of the idiots before they went down the slides.

Like someone else mentioned, it’s not the click bait-y stuff that news likes to run with, but shows why training and procedures at work and everyone is safe. Proud of our Spirit team.

Thunder Rooster 10-03-2021 02:16 PM

So did they pop a slide with engines running? There is that picture floating around.

Who's "they"?

Pilots? Probably not, got checklists for that.

FA's? Probably not but maybe.

PAX? Anything's possible.

Some uncertainty in the cabin on this one.

But if you take away all doubt as to the sense of urgency, it often works out quite well...

$500 fine for everyone who takes a bag. Make it part of the safety demo.

Why? So they can ignore that too?

Those fines for smoking in the lav aren’t overly effective imoho. This wouldn’t be either.

Anything added to the safety brief would be a liability mitigation aid for the company only. Which seems to be about the only thing C suites consider these days.

Ed Force One 10-06-2021 02:50 PM

So far, to my knowledge, no one has died because of bag-getters. Eventually this will change.

Maybe then the rules will change as well.

Yup. No one got out behind that one turd with all his bags.

Ed Force One 10-07-2021 07:51 AM

I stand corrected. I had not heard of this accident, even though it was very recent.

My point, I believe, is still valid. I think more can be done to let people know. Will it help? Probably not. At least not the first time. I imagine it going something like this:
There's an accident. Despite my newly suggested updates, people still waste time grabbing their bags and people behind them die. Criminal charges are filed, those shown on video (there will be tons of video) with bags are fined heavily and possibly stand trial for involuntary manslaughter or something of the like. (I'm not a lawyer.) They eventually skate, but maybe after that people will begin to take it seriously.

Yeah, I'm pretty pessimistic when it comes to human behavior any more.

TransWorld 10-07-2021 10:15 AM

That lack of common sense in a panicked crowd behavior is why doors are required to swing outward in large assembly areas. People push and jam up against the doors, trapping everyone in a fire. You do not have that in a small conference room or an office.

Agreed. The herd mentality is a dangerous one but sadly, something that seems to be part of our DNA when the **** hits the fan, with the exception being those trained for how to deal with it.

F9'er here; Great job by the crew. The subject of locking overheads has been discussed ad nauseam over on PPRune. There's a good thread over there about this incident too..
I think the NTSB will be taking a long look at the Fan Blade failure and certification; the cabin videos make for some great recurrent training.
Nicely done y'all..
