Reserve is tough, only 10 days off and lots of crappy flying that no one else wants to do.

All that being said I should qualify it with the fact that I actually do really like working here. You do some fun and interesting flying and the crews are great. I think there's a lot of potential for contract improvements too, with negotiations approaching fast I think a lot of big gains will be coming. Call be a hopeless optimist. Really, coming to sunny now is just kinda a gamble. Coming here could be like coming to NK just before their last big contract and you get hundreds of pilots after you quick. Or it could be 5 years before our next contract. No one knows, it's just how much risk you can tolerate.

This post says it well. You will have your posts that someone will gripe all the negative and recommend other airlines. Yet, you need to question why are they still at the airline themselves and urge someone to not come?
It’s whatever works out best for yourself.
You know where your current job is and won’t go up much from there. The possibility of SY going big like NK is possible, but not guaranteed.
If I recall correctly the SEC filing states, SY is expected to have 60 PAX airplanes by the end of 23. We’re currently at 42 give or take. That’s prior to any expectation of going public being successful. Jude will do his best to get SY to go public, so you can take it as very good odds that at a minimum is the growth to expect.
The other thing to consider is the current rate. They just released the 767 rates and ALPA stated that they expect to negotiate the 737 rates within 90 days. The Co and ALPA have been on good terms lately.
Personally I feel something confidential is already happening, and we are waiting for it to be announced.

Lots of really good answers so far. It is important to emphasize the poor reserve rules, and how abysmal commuting to said reserve is. On the flip side, the Amazon flying has made some lines available that are better for commuting. Trip rig is poor and as a result days off are poor, especially for reserve but also for lineholders.

The fact that there are a lot of positive things out there that may come to fruition soon makes it an attractive gamble, as long as you are aware that it is just that, a gamble. Where else can you go now and do the flying we do with lots of growth and low upgrade times? idk of anywhere. The fact that upgrades are back to just over 2 years after all that has happened in the last year is impressive to me.

How is the bidding at SY? Is it possible to drop trips/reserve days?

Drop...No.
Advertise your trip/reserve day and have someone else pick up...maybe.

You forgot to add - drop WITHOUT pay or the ability to swap? Yes!

Btw, sweet UPS link, bro. Nobody has ever considered applying to them before applying to Sunny.

Are reserves used much? I have an interview with SC in the near future and will be a commuter. Does SC have long call reserve or is it all 2-hour?

Reserves get used fairly regularly, with some guys breaking guarantee too. No long call reserve, our contract isn't the easiest for commuting.

Commuting to reserve is really awful. Plan 20 days of reserve plus a commute on either end of your reserve block. Commuting to a line can be alright, depending on where you live.
