P&W GTF fancy name for turbo-prop

The GTF appears to be simply a shrouded turbo-prop, having a fixed pitch prop. I'm sure that if the engineers could have invented a strong enough and light enough prop control, that this would have been a variable pitch prop instead of fixed pitch. Maybe in the next iteration.

Yep. Remember the Uducted Fan? Looked like a pusher turboprop to me!

joepilot,

That could be said for any turboFAN engine.

There are programs underway by P&W and Rolls to rehash the mothballed "unducted fan".

As if this is new? Even before the "gearing" of the turbofan engine most just saw it as a ducted turboprop.
