Things to do on long legs.

Anyone have some realistic ways to pass the time on long flights up front? Besides the usual, studying the aircraft books, operations manuals, complaining about the contract, and the ever popular meowing on guard, etc?

Is one allowed to use the on-board wifi/entertainment on a personal device?, Streaming, ipod, 20 questions with your buddy, I Spy, the hotel newspaper, etc.....

This is one of the main reasons I got seriously bored and left the long haul world. BOS or MIA to SEA was the worst, particularly in winter. I much prefer shorter legs. If you do contemplate using Portable Electronic Devices to prevent boredom, make sure you ask the Capt first if they are OK with it and ensure no Feds are in the jumpseat watching you. See 121.542(d); you can thank the crew that overflew their destination by several hundred miles while they were totally oblivious, bidding for next month’s sked.

Millennial?

If you're bored, you may not be doing your job, hence the need to be entertained every second of the flight.

There comes a point, sometime around when one gives up the short pants and is old enough to vote, when one should be able to entertain one's self. You know...plotting, position reports, systems checks, referencing the QRH, conversation (old fashioned, I know), fuel checks, all the usual stuff. Maybe it's even possible to refrain from broadcasting one's youth by not making catcalls on 121.5.

Save that pent up energy to go post selfies on face book after the flight is over. Type conversations at 90 wpm with your thumbs. All that millennial more-important-than-breath stuff.

I'm sorry but this is just soooo stupid---and before John Burke jumps in again.... this is coming from a Gen X'er, not a millennial.

Just because 2 idiots did something really dumb to bring about this reg shouldn't mean the rest of us with common sense should pay a price....

Below 10,000........absolutely this should be against the regs. At FL 350 on a four hr flight........WTF.

If 135 operators are permitted to use these devices above 10K, why should 121 be any different??..........and apparently it wasn't until 5 yrs ago.

Sheeshhhh

If you want to steer clear of regulatory hassles indulge in paper, or non connected entertainment. Technically most PEDs are banned because they are capable of being connected, but it would be very hard to prove you were using it if you stay off the net. Not would anyone probably care.

Plenty of people just blow it off and connect to the on board WiFi, but if anything bad happens they will almost certainly figure that out. Don't be an idiot and connect to company systems, they can flag you for that even if nothing goes wrong.
