Radar4Pilots (Archie Trammel) Course?
 

Anyone ever taken this course? https://www.radar4pilots.com

Appears to be Archie Trammell material. I'm really interested in learning more and becoming more proficient with weather radar (specifically use of tilt, gain, etc). I've read some small excerpts from Archie I've found scattered throughout the internet, but it would be nice to have something more comprehensive. The radar training provided by my company leaves a lot to be desired.

Archie was a very knowledgeable guy, but no living soul has ever managed to make it through any part of his course, and remain awake without the use of artificial stimulus.

Haha yea I have an engineering background (worked for Honeywell Space Systems for a while) and even I have a hard time digesting the articles I've found, let alone trying to do the mental math while flying. I'm not that smart though :p

I tried to find some content from David Gwinn, but can't seem to find much and his website doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Just trying to educate myself as much as possible on the usage of weather radar. So far I've just been reading prior threads on here and other sites, which seems to be somewhat useful.

Gwinn has been gone for a number of years, so his site is also gone. He poked a lot of holes in Trammel’s arguments.

That’s a bummer. Shocking how little good content there is on the subject.

Dave Gwinn and Archie Trammel had some opposition, but some of it may have been self-promotion. I found it best to listen to both. Trammel's material is still of value today; the basics don't really change.

Just curious, what kind of radar are you using? Honeywell? Collins? Or something different? What platform?

I’d agree both presented valuable information. Tilt mgt especially, not a fan of doing all the mental math of Archie’s.

Back in the mid 90’s we were forced to watch Archie Trammel's presentations every year during recurrent. Dry is putting it mildly, however, if you can stay awake, he has some really good insight to offer. I wrote notes and practiced his methods until they felt pretty natural. Repetition was key.

I also remember dozing through these courses during RGT until about ten years ago when they went out of style. While SOME of the material is applicable, and the "logic based" approach at least gets people thinking about practical application of using the weather radar - which (the thinking part) has a benefit in and of itself... in the real world a combination of experience and using all information (particularly cross checking with the Mk 1) regarding the environment you're in and what's ahead of you (particularly above and below for "hints" of convective activity) is much more practical and intuitive when using the weather radar as an "operator".
