How long until somebody puts one in the dirt trying to use the iPad on an approach? We'll have people using the GPS over chart layout trying to shoot approaches they aren't equipped for.

The GNS5870 is not only cheaper, it has better battery life and unlike the Bad Elf, you can leave your iPad on a charger. The GNS uses Bluetooth to talk to the iPad rather than connecting to it directly. I wouldn't shoot an ILS with it, but it's a great tool with Foreflight/Beacon North America Apps. It's funny how my lap has better avionics than my panel in my C150

Even on some aviation boards folks seen to get excited about WAAS in an iPad. Personally, can't figure it out. You don't even need WAAS to fly an LNAV instrument approach - all WAAS really gives you from an aviation standpoint is (a) vertical guidance approaches and (b) the ability to forego having gound-based systems on board.
Neither of which mean a hill of beans in the context of an iPad. |

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe the ability to access additional satellite(s) had some additional GPS reliability. But I definitely see your point. I think any overlay on the Ipad is too much. I also see CFIT issues with this. The Ipad needs to be backup only IMO.
