This should be a very interesting article.

50 Amazing Aircraft Engines | Flying Magazine

Anybody care to mention their favorites (before looking at the article :))

I'm a particular fan of the PT6A-60A at present.
I feel certain that the PT-6 series will be high on the list.

Well with 58 tries he named a few of the obvious ones, but I would add the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G and Wankels plus aircraft steam engines and solar powered engines. When you think about it "amazing engine" means nothing and everything. How about ion thrusters and hydrogen burners? A bunch of developmental rocket engines come to mind also. How about the space ladder? That is an engine, it does work and qualifies as "amazing". :)

PT6A-67D - I swear it's bulletproof.

I assume all PT6's are awesome.

Gjn290 03-16-2014 10:29 PM

PT6A-21, PT6A-114, PT6A-140 fan here. I won't quite swear they're bullet proof, I've personally seen two catastrophic failures pretty close together(PT6A-114). That aside I'll swear by them.

How about the mighty R-4360 Wasp Major?

Pratt & Whitney R-4360-20 first start on Vimeo

Experimental versions of the Corsair and Thunderbolt had 4360s, but the war ended and jets were coming, so they never reached the production line.
