A CQFO is a Captain Qualified FIRST OFFICER.
It is the companys desperate attempt to staff both the right and left seat at the same time as they couldn't attract enough new FOs in order to upgrade organic FOs while not hurting their staffing at the same time.
Make no mistake, you will be a first officer. ON RESERVE. And they can use you for EITHER SEAT which means that you are, in every sense, schedulings Bi**h. When you finally upgrade, you will be stuck as a junior captain as organic FO's will continue to upgrade when they hit their times and push you back down the list.
Is that worth the blended pay rate? Is that worth the quality of life upheaval? In our current state where PIC is proven to not be as much of a requirement as it used to, I say no.

How's life at TSA? I've worked at a regional in Florida currently on a one year charter on demand contract and was thinking of coming over to TSA. Problem is I live in Orlando area and was wondering where new guys usually end up being based and what the reserve schedules seem to look like. Also I hear reserve is airport reserve, and damnit for me that would involve crash padding. Every job has a catch. And how long are most of you all reserve before a line is likely. Thanks for any info.

all new hires are getting STL. Most of reserve will be airport reserve. if you have a stretch of 5 days of reserve, plan for at least 4 of them to be airport.
I sat on reserve for 3 months before getting a line. That was a year ago. Not sure how long it is now.
This is my second regional, and I gotta say, I really enjoy it here. Night and day with the other one I used to work at. (doesnt mean it is free of the hassles and BS that is part and parcel of regional airline flying)

Your mileage will vary.

If you know what you are doing, you shouldn't be sitting airport reserve for 4/5 days.

I sat reserve for all of two weeks in STL this summer. Airport reserve is common for the days you are actually reserve, but you will be used a lot.
FWIW, I've had a good time here even with all the b-ing and moaning on this site. Upgrades should be pretty much as quick as you get the time.
Its not a perfect place, but I'd like to know the regional that we all want to retire at?
