United Airlines (UAL) is preparing to furlough 685 flight attendants after offers of leaves and part-time work failed to produce enough volunteers to forestall job cuts at the world’s second-largest carrier.
Negotiations between the airline and the Association of Flight Attendants are still under way, and the current furlough total may fall, Christen David, a United spokeswoman, said today in a telephone interview.
“The effective date of the involuntary furlough is April 1, 2014, which allows time to continue working with management to find alternatives and solutions,” Greg Davidowitch, president of United’s AFA chapter, told members in a letter on the union’s website.

I wonder what would have happened had the pilots not ratified. And of course these furloughs are all coming from the LUAL side.....

This event will go largely unnoticed by a huge chunk of the worker bees who consider themselves essential to the operation. Various rumors and reasons will be floated to account for this. They will attempt to discredit fellow employees and to validate the carnage. All of them will be swallowed and digested without question. Captain Oblivion and his followers will bravely forge ahead, convinced that all is well and that corporate benevolence and fair play will prevail. Meanwhile, the board rooms in Atlanta (and wherever AAL will be headquartered) are filled with suits in full guffaw, astonished at their good fortune. Jeff will retire with a horrible legacy, and he will be a gazillionaire.

And why would any company want their FA capped at 80/m? What a waste of resources. It's a L-UAL FA's fault, they should have pushed for new updated TA 3 years ago, and match DALs. Personally I prefer to fly with new hire FA, at least they are excited about their new jobs, and doing it right, great attitude, amongst other attributes (and you all know what I mean , we should furlough in revers seniority.
