UAL non members
 

I recently noticed a list posted in the IAH pilot lounge that contained a list of pilots who do not pay dues and are non members.

Do these lists exist in other domiciles?

I was under the impression United was a closed shop. It was at Continental prior to the merger.

Because we are agency/shop through our CBA, non members must pay a contract administrative fee that conceivably is the same as a MIGS dues....

There are several reasons that one my become a non member, scabbing is but one way... One can have what they perceive to be a major grievance with the Association to the point of feeling the only way to display their dissatisfaction with the Association is to become a non member.

Without getting further into the weeds on a public forum, the people on the domicile lists are just the pilots in that council who are non members. It is not a scab list.

That's what I thought as well. However according to this list, there is another category that are non members who don't pay administrative fees.

I forget the exact process but I believe there was a process where a SCAB who was willing to pay back dues all the way back to the DIRTY DEED, and maybe a few other things, then with maybe a sponsor go before his local council meeting for a vote on readmission to the union.

If they were voted down for readmission they did not have to pay the admin going forward.

If they were voted in they got to wear an alpa pin, became good standing and payed dues.

I know of one or two in each category.

Exactly. Worthless individuals with no moral compass. It’s why there is such a strong culture at united to wear the Alpa pin to demonstrate unity. Yes, I realize that post merger cal scabs got pins, but they’ll be gone very soon, and we need to keep the unity culture strong. As was quoted in ops years ago by a senior Captain who walked the line, “I’d rather be a bastard child at a father and son picnic than be caught without an ALPA pin on my tie at work”.

Getting further into the weeds, any idea how this may eventually affect ALPA?

I know this case involves government employee unions, but it may nonetheless set a precedent and some will say that the "rights" of non-government employees are no more or less "protected" than the "rights" of government employees. Or does the Railway Labor Act change the situation somehow?

Lost my pin on a trip once years ago ... Had several guys give me chit for not having a pin ... I thanked them for noticing and for appropriate treatment.
