British Airways Cancels Nearly All Flights
 

This blows my mind...
Isn't it cheaper to concede to the pilots (that fly the planes that are making them money) than to get to this? :confused:

British Air has canceled “nearly 100 percent [of] our flights” due to an ongoing pay dispute with its pilots. “Unfortunately, with no detail from BALPA [the British Airline Pilots Association] on which pilots would strike, we had no way of predicting how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly, so we had no option but to cancel nearly 100 per cent [of] our flights,” the airline said in a statement Monday morning.

The airline says it is “working tirelessly” to provide options, including refunds, rebooking at a later date, and rebooking on another airline.

For its part, BALPA says it “put forward a proposal to BA management last Wednesday that would have enabled us to call off the strikes for Monday and Tuesday. BA didn’t reply.”

The BBC’s Simon Jones, reporting from Heathrow, said, “On a Monday morning, Terminal 5 would normally be bustling with people, jetting off on holiday or business trips. Today, it seems more like a ghost town. The staff far outnumber the handful of passengers.”

“We understand the frustration and disruption BALPA’s strike action has caused you,” British Air continued in a statement. “After many months of trying to resolve the pay dispute, we are extremely sorry that it has come to this. We remain ready and willing to return to talks with BALPA.”

BALPA is scheduled to hold another strike on September 27.

Standard practice, they didn’t need to do it, they are extracting maximum pain on their customers and pointing the finger at BALPA to get public sentiment on their side.

Both sides have to prove they're serious.

If they didn't the cost to that side would be higher than that of a 2-day strike. Nice of the EU/UK government to actually let them walk.

That's how it's done in the free world.

It is all fun and games until you realize your current contract wasn't magically given to those that came before you. It is all of us vs management and their way of thinking.

Apparently the pilots all lost their non rev benefits today. Unreal....

Well, yeah when you walk you don't get anything from the company nor should you expect to... it's not FMLA :rolleyes:

But if they don't get them back when they return... walk again.

It was only a scheduled 2 day strike. They're already back and working with no way to get to work.

Whilst losing staff travel was always going to happen, some of the company's actions beggar belief.

Their crowning achievement so far is removing pilots from augmented crews and sending long range flights out with minimum legal crew. Anyone fancy a 2 pilot LHR-YVR on minimum rest? While the argument could be made that this is happening to release crew to operate other flights and recover the program, the pilots pulled from heavy crewed flights are not being used; this is purely a punitive measure.

This has resulted in small tech delays being cancelled as there is not the cushion of the extended FTL's allowed by the heavy crew.

This just the beginning, methinks. Anybody from Air Canada wanna come pick their boy up and take him home?
