Unhappy UAW Pay Cuts

Do other unions ask their members for pay cuts as do the airlines. Have the autoworkers been asked to take a pay cut? I haven't heard about this, but I always remember that Pilots/Cabin Attendants, Maintenance making front page news during their negotiations. I am not trying to start a war here, just interested in how non aviation unions differ.

Keep in mind that auto industry workers lack "shiny assembly-line syndrome".

So they seem smarter than us.... Some of us would probably break ranks and work for less if it got them out of the compact car assebly line and into the Escalade line.

Just a quick thought on this....

I wonder if other labor union types like teachers, transportation workers, mine workers, steel workers, screen writers, etc etc drive cars manufactured by United Auto Workers?

If I were a United Auto Worker, and I saw a union steel worker, teacher, truck driver, or mine worker driving a vehicle that wasn't made by a United Auto worker I would feel extremely betrayed.

maybe the AFL-CIO needs to send out a memo...

but I guess they were too busy endorsing the next president who wants to tax our employers to the point of no return

We went through that " Buy American " phase in the 70's and all that did was make Toyota and Nissan stronger by building cars in the US. I can see this thread starting to drift.............

Default Pay isn't the only way to grant concessions.

Yes, the union gave some concessions the companies wanted during their last contract. They are not in contract negotiations now. They are involved with the "negotiations " for bailout dollars from congress.

I don't think that buying a Ford/GM/Chrysler made in the US by a United Auto Worker is going to help toyota grow. I think that if I bought a toyota it would.

During the energy crisis in the 70's is when toyota started selling more cars in the US and got it's foot in the door. Many people were buying those brand new toyota corollas for $1999 and the US automakers felt the pinch. The big 3 then developed a new line of fuel efficient and somewhat budget cars. This started to cut into the Japanese import numbers whose dominance was starting to rise. To abate this rise Toyota started looking at building factories in the US to stem the made in America label, after all if the toyota was built in the States by Americans how bad could that be.

On another note, Thankx MD11Hog, I knew I was missing something.

I had a Dodge truck and it sucked. So I should buy another one to support a poorly organized and managed US auto industry?

Quality and price is what should drive the market, not the flag it hangs in front of its headquarters.
