Should I continue my ALPA membership
 

I resigned (not furloughed) from a regional a couple months ago to go back to school. Considering the rapid decline of the company, combined with timing pressures regarding when school started, etc, this was the best choice for my given situation.

Going forward, I do not see myself in an airline cockpit for the next couple to three years, due mainly to the storm overhead. I will very likely just work in my backup profession for a while, but wouldn't be surprised to see myself back in a training class within 5 years.

That being said, is there any benefit to maintaining my ALPA membership during the interim? Can I even do this when currently not employed by an airline?

My gut tells me I'll be back to the industry in due time and I wouldn't mind being a part, in a small way, of the group even though not active.

If you no longer work for a carrier(fired, quit, not on furlough) you're no longer in the union. I don't think it would be an option but even if it were there's no benefit to being in ALPA for you that I can see.

If you quit/resigned from your airline job then there is nothing for you to maintain. You will not have an income from your airline so no dues. If you want to stay "in the loop" with whats going on at your airline or all ALPA carriers as a whole then follow up with the news on the ALPA website and contact your rep (former rep) about any possible Associate mebership probgram you may be elidgible for. However, since you resigned I dont think there is all that much for you to do right now.

I see no reason to retain your membership if you are not employed with a carrier. Its just an extra expense at this point.

Correct. There might be a way to keep getting the magazine, but that's about it. If you join another carrier, I think your status reverts to "reactivated" until you're off probation. Spare me ... :rolleyes:
