Delta Flight Attendants file for election!

Association of Flight Attendants-CWA

Washington, DC - The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today asked the National Mediation Board (NMB) to declare that the Delta/Northwest merger has created a single transportation system that requires the NMB to conduct a representation election for the carriers' flight attendants. Northwest Airlines flight attendants are currently represented by AFA-CWA. Delta flight attendants are not represented by a union.

The question now is...will the Delta pilot group stand with us? Or against us?

Please share your views...thanx!

And what type of support are you expecting from the pilot group??
What are you expecting us "pilots" to stand against??

What type of support?

Some pilots are now wearing AFA pins on their ties, or AFA bag tags on their bags. I would also ask that you discuss how its important to have a contract.

How can you work against us?

By not telling the flight attendants that they are stupid if they vote union. Yes I have heard this.

In a recent poll on the questions of unionization, flight attendants said that pilots are 3rd on the list of people they listen to after Family members and close friends.

Good point Flight Attendants listen to pilots because they trust them. I feel that trying to manipulate a Flight Attendant's decision is a betrayal of that trust. Each and every Flight Attendant will make that very personal decision when the polls open, nor I or you has ANY right to attempt to influence that decision.

It appears that you are trying to draw a line in the sand between pilots and flight attendants. Furthermore, you seem to be implying that we are either with you or against you. I know you don't speak for every flight attendant, but if this is the type of attitude you are conveying then you may need to do some of "soul-searching".

Basically it will come down to a vote, so let the democratic process of voting run it's course.

Its called solidarity. The Delta pilots enjoy the benefits of collective bargaining and should encourage flight attendants to use collective bargaining as a tool to further their careers and have protection.

We are both crewmembers and have to work side by side. Don't you think it would be better if both of our groups were covered by collective bargaining agreements?

I'm not a flight attendant at Delta, so it's difficult for me to answer that question. In my honest opinion, the need for a collective bargaining agreement depends on the NEED for one.

I'm not certain how far off compensation and work rules are from what is objectively considered industry leading.

Bottom line, I don't think pilots should attempt to "encourage", as you put it, the Flight Attendants to unionize, nor do I think the pilots should discourage the Flight Attendants to unionize.
Again, that is a decision that each and every flight attendant must make for themselves.
