TSA Failure & Why America Hates Unions

Because most, if not all, unions are corrupt and morally bankrupt. The TSA is a perfect example.

After PROMISING it would not unionize if allowed to form, and THEN after being allowed to form with this promise then subsequently promising pay would not be linked to performance if it did unionize, then AFTER unionizing saying it was ridiculous to think pay could not be linked to performance (2 broken promises back-to-back), this is what taxpayers are getting for their hundreds of millions of dollars...

An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials, ABC News has learned.

The series of tests were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who pose as passengers, setting out to beat the system.

According to officials briefed on the results of a recent Homeland Security Inspector General’s report, TSA agents failed 67 out of 70 tests, with Red Team members repeatedly able to get potential weapons through checkpoints.
What comes next is predictable...demands for more pay in order to improve performance results.

It's extortion.

Unions are reviled nationwide for what they have become. Public unions fleece the taxpayers, and private unions fleece their members.

If you have been lamenting the demise of unions, public support for them, and their increasing ineffectiveness + inability to truly benefit their members, now you know why (if you didn't already).

They have become indefensible and it's time to hold ALL of them accountable. The TSA is a perfect example of why this is true.

Let's cut the BS. Tell us all what did ALPA did to you?

SayAlt 06-01-2015 06:19 AM

Here's a better idea. Why don't you tell us all what ALPA has done for you? As a taxpayer, the TSA isn't doing ANYTHING to protect you or your family.

This isn't about me, but your attempt to deflect from the topic to make it about me is noted, as is your notion that pointing out your tax dollars are being flushed down the toilet is "BS".

Your rant is way off base. While I agree with you that the TSA is ineffective and not much more than security theater the union issue is not a causal factor.
Things much higher up the food chain have a greater influence on performance than a union trying to protect its members from unfair labor practices.
I could go on about how unions and the middle class go hand in hand but I'm guessing you've already made up your mind.

Personally my bank account and 401k enjoy being "fleeced" more and more every year. I figure I owe at least a third of that to a "corrupt" union. :D

They fill in the amount.

SayAlt 06-01-2015 07:06 AM

How is my rant way off base? Do you believe the avg. American is educated and informed enough to know the difference between public and private unions, much less why/how ALPA is different from the TSA?

I posit they aren't, and furthermore they could care less. Which leaves it to those of us who DO care about unions (and the middle class) to be the ones to get worked up over unions blatant ineffectiveness and the sub-par performance of it's membership. I posit that the avg. American will look at the TSA then lump ALPA in the same basket.

Put another way, the gross negligence of the TSA causes indirect but very real harm to other unions.

How am I wrong?

Now you have a point. I think you lost your target audience here (union labor) when you stated "Because most, if not all, unions are corrupt and morally bankrupt."

Organized labor has served many a pilot very well.

Public vs private sector unions are two different things.

Even Roosevelt knew that public sector unions should never be allowed.

Very good points and well put. Your first post wasn't very clear, but I agree with you. I'm new to unions myself, but my husband is a union plumber. His dues go for our ridiculously cheap health insurance which covers quite a bit. I wish the unions spent more of their dues collections on public education of what types of unions there are and what they're good for.

I worked construction long before becoming a pilot. First for a non-union company and then later for a union. Safety was much improved as were pay and benefits.

As far as airlines a union is required when everything is seniority based. "If you don't like it then leave" is unfair when leaving entitles a complete reset of everything you've accomplished... yet without a union you would have management doing just that.
