CFI to UAL CPP
#381
Did some digging of my own and surprisingly the Britt I mentioned previously basically did come over with only CFI time. I agree that no program was in place and yes, he was an intern, but why would UAL drop their standards like that? Don’t recall CAL ever doing that and you had to meet a minimum experience threshold to get onboard.
As desirable as UAL was in the ‘90’s, (and it truly was at that time), why hire someone like that?
Your lower time intern comment has me puzzled as well. Did UAL hire that way as common practice and how often did it really happen?
Not throwing any stones just genuinely curious as to the whys and when’s?

I think I might know the person to which you are referring. The one I am thinking of was a minority flight attendant who won some kind of law suit. If that’s the one she was let go several years back.

There was a time when the published mins were 350 FW PIC. Of course, student time and other was removed to count for that. So in reality, the TT would be more like 5-600 at a minimum. Not that it really matters much.

Sure, there's "standards". But don't forget, in 2005-06-07, CAL DID hire "low time pilots". Sure, they met a standard. 12-1500 hours GA/CFI, maybe a few months at a regional, and into the right seat at CAL. Some into the 777. Sure, SOME turbine/121 time is better than NONE, but that wee bit wouldn't exactly make them prime time material. Granted, not a larger amount, but probably in the SAME PROPORTION as lower time at UAL
Because law suits and NS, that's why.
See above. Probably about as common as well connected son/daughter (of scab), etc that was hired at CAL 05-06-07.

I withheld judgment on this program because I would have jumped at the opportunity to do the same thing. That being said I just ran into one of them and was less than impressed. Mostly had to do with attitude, very cocky. Another 42 years at UAL might rub some of it off.

I think some of it is just the age difference. The 25-30 yr olds we have hired in the past knew the drill. They were interns or someones mentee and understood the culture. These are just young guys that were pretty common at the regionals. They take about 3-4 yrs to calm down and then they figure out the job. I think they are just gung ho right out of college and hit the lottery. I am pretty sure some of them are still wrapping their heads around how incredibly lucky they are.
I fly with a lot of new people that got the 756 right out of training, they have all been excellent to a man/woman- maybe I'm just lucky. Just because they're "new" doesn't mean they aren't experienced.

While I agree with you, this thread is about the 10 or so people that went from cfi to new hire here. They aren't the average new hire by any means. Our average civilian new hire avg's 6000 some odd hours and these were 1500-2000 hrs of GA time.
