TWO QRHs!

Looks like we are getting two copies of the QRH again. Huzzah...

Thanks to everyone who submitted FSAPs.

And put them back in bag when you leave the aircraft. And this one,

FOM 1.80.1 Clarifies that the standard uniform consists of “current” United-issued wings and “current” United-issued hat emblem.

Seven years after merger, this has to be clarified?

Thank God!!

I was not looking forward (even in the Sim) to try and run the EVAC checklist from the ipad....

Having recently completed a recurrent, using the iPad QRH in the sim for the Evac was easy and convenient.

Then you haven't been to TK in a long time. We've been that way for over 18 months. How does everyone read two of them at once?

Sad, but yes. And will probably still be continuously even after this.

As if guys thought United wings meant from any year...

Probe 04-29-2017 01:48 PM

Evac checklist?

I still haven't figured out how to get my IPAD clock on the home screen to flash 12:00 like my Betamax VCR at home. I am just not comfortable without that constant in my life.

Otters 04-29-2017 02:26 PM

a huge shout out to Captain Don Dobias, UAL ALPA Training Committee Chairman. Don worked relentlessly behind the scenes to force the company into reviewing its decision. The thankless work often going unnoticed behind the scenes.

This is so strange. I guess we needed to make it both idiot proof and pig-headed proof.

"How to Wear Your Wings"
Act 1 Scene 1
Setting: IAH CPO
Backdrop: Pilots sitting in 20 year old musty Lazy-Boy couches watching Fox News.
(Casting Director Note: Find the fattest pilots available for the extras.)
(Wardrobe Note: Make sure all are in full uniform, including hats, but no ALPA pins. Barbecue stains on the shirts of the 3 fattest extras)

IAH Intern: "Hey the Chief Pilot wants to see you in his office."
Pilot: "I am in the 'Chief Pilots Office'." (Makes quotation marks symbols with his fingers and gestures around Flight Operations)
(Gets up and follows Intern anyway)

Act 1 Scene 2
Setting: IAH Chief Pilots Office (Yes, his actual 10x10 office, i.e. not Flight Operations)
(Set Design Note: As much Legacy Continental paraphernalia that can be found should be in his office)

CP: (abruptly) "You are out of uniform."
Pilot: "No I'm not."
CP: "Those wings are not the correct wings."
Pilot: (Opens up company iPad) "FOM. Uniform. Pilots shall wear the United issued wings." (Turns off iPad starts to walk out of office)
CP: (Angrily) "THOSE are not the most recently issues wings!"
(Camera pan to CP desk and walls showing plaques, statues, and pictures of Legacy Continental Wings)
Pilot: "The FOM doesn't say anything about "most recent" wings. (makes quotation mark gestures with hands).
It only says "United issued" wings. (makes gestures again with hands)
United issued me these wings. Have a nice day." (Smiles, turns and walks out of the office)

Fade to credits. Rhapsody in Blue playing in background.

And the results are clear that the neither the iPad or we are nimble enough to handle the myriad of functions (JeppFD-Pro, WOM, QRG, etc.) and time critical QRH/electronic checklist non-normal/EPs on one glitchy and battery-limited screen.

We don't, but each pilot has to have quick access to one during certain scenarios like rejects, pilot incapacitation, smoke and fumes, etc. And the cost of printing two QRHs compared to the benefit could not be more insignificant.

I'm sure I could work out a very similar scenario for DENTK or the SFO FPA but I digress.

Still can't fathom why anyone would wear any portion of their old uniform except for possible brain damage and/or living in a bygone era that really wasn't as great as you remember it. I'm not just picking on the unitards wearing old UAL items but also the CAL types who have somehow convinced themselves that our former airline was nothing but the cats meow.

It's over people, we have merged and nothing that you say or wear will change that including age old, lame-ass legacy bling.

As soon as the merger was finalized LUAL added LCAL models/history to DTK (see study area in F building). They added LCAL aircraft to the mural in DEN ops. SFO only has a singular picture of a LUAL Six. LAX has nothing. I haven't been to IAH training center in 11 months, but nothing LUAL there. Never saw anything in CLE or IAH ops either. Nice try, but a swing and a miss.

They had to have something to balance the TORQUE pins on display on the lower level.

I'm referring more to the tone of each location. Can't go through the SFO FPA without hearing loud anti-CAL bashing and seeing lame legacy uniform bling. TK has a similar, albiet toned down problem as well.

Ignorance is bliss FD.

Based in SFO I can't say I ever remember seeing or hearing that in the recent past. Maybe an occasional oddball is out there, but as a commuter I spend a TON of time in the SFO FPA and I just don't notice that being a "thing".

Honestly, with all this Dr. Strangelove-Dead Bunny-Leggings crap going on the LAST thing I care about is which legacy anyone is originally from.

I spend a lot of time in SFO ops on RSV I can't even tell you the last time I saw legacy wings, or bashing one way or the other.

Can't say I've ever seen that, on any but a few odd balls being based there and nothing but a handful of times. What stood out were those gawdawful embroidered wings on shirts, the pinnacle of cheap.

Lots of pilots on reserve again who haven't been on reserve since they were a new hire.

We had a merger. I think it was in the newspapers. Time to get over the "legacy this and that." I doubt seriously if the suits up there in Chicago or TK are wearing any legacy bell-bottoms or polyester leisure suits because they want to reminisce about the past. We pilots tend to take this stuff way too seriously.

We didn't get a vote on weather or not to merge. So who cares? It's a uniform. I don't control what color the paint job is on the jet and I don't control what uniform I get issued. I do care if the paychecks cash and if the cash is green. Thank God not getting paid in Russian Rubles.

Disco balls and bee-gees music for everyone.

I would second that.

But, it should not have been that hard. The DEN TK people are super-hard-headed. Just hard to communicate with.

I had to threaten to fly around the Thompson Airways B757 MEL along with the Delta MEL because they wouldn't put it on the IPAD. Had to file numerous stupid PDR's and lots of silly emails to get them to see the light that an electronic log book has nothing to do with actually being able to read and reference the aircraft MEL.

In more than one simulator session I just handed the IPad to the check airman and said "here you go, you figure it out." They were trying to force us to use the Ipad to run complex emergency checklists. You can't even save book marks from update to update. You can't high-light, mark pages, etc. Once a new update comes out to the checklist or normal and abnormals, what you thought you knew, and where you thought it was - was gone.

The Ipad is not the place for this kind of stuff, especially tired, and blurry-eyed in the middle of the night, or in the weather. Or, when you drop your Ipad and it is frozen up and locked you out after you put in the wrong six digit code for the 5th time.

The beauty of the QRH is it's simple and it always works.

Ah, yesterday.............

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be.
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

I haven't run into the legacy uniform stuff myself but I think you have a good point here... Too many pilots' identity comes from their career and company they work for. The CEOs and executives often move to different companies all the time and for the most part it doesn't much matter which company they work for. Because of seniority, it's in our best interest to stay with one company for our career, which makes the company a more significant aspect to your life, whereas execs are free to move around as necessary and don't have the same incentives for identifying with a certain company. I'm not speaking out against the seniority system, it's just an observation and I think maybe has something to do with why some pilots may not want to give up their "legacy" wings. I agree with you though that it really shouldn't matter as long as the job fulfills your needs.

100% agree. QRH from the iPad is idiotic, and I'm a huge proponent of the EFB. However if you need a QRH, you likely need it right now, and will need it in conjunction with other things. Turning the iPad into a Jesus bolt is too much of a stretch for my comfort factor.

I understand.

Here's my big take-away.

If you are Legacy UAL, great. Put your wings in the desk drawer or make a cool shadow box and long for the glory days.

If you are a legacy CAL pilot, fantastic. Put your wings on the shelf, or frame them and make a cool momento box.

Same goes for Eastern and Pan Am. We have a few of them here as well. All that I have met from those two legacies are super to fly with. Very enjoyable and offer a great perspective.

We will know that our merger is complete when two things happen: 1. We no longer work for CAL UAL Holdings, and 2. We wear our uniform proudly and no longer refer to legacy this, or legacy that.

When the two things above happen, I think it's advantage pilot group. It's hard for management to push around a unified pilot group.
