Default Volunteer TDY (good/bad)

Just curious for a commuter if there are any benefits to TDY. Commute would be about the same length, do you get paid for PS flights to and from home?, or any added pay benefit? Also do you bid as you normally would? I would be more jr to the base where there TDY'ing to so I could get a worse schedule. Any insight would be appreciated, thank you.

My recollection is your commute is positive space. I don't recall at all the company paying you for your commute. But, I do think you are on perdiem for 100 percent of the time you are on the "clock." So once you get in your temporary base you are on the clock. If it works for you, then it's gotta be a positive overall. Some pilots do it for a temporary change of scenery and to get acquainted with a new base of considering moving there. Nice to be able to look at neighborhoods and schools on the company's time/dime.

The per diem is a sticking point. Good luck using their "worksheet" to log your flights and submit your claim.

Of course, it can't be done on the iPad. And when you do it on your machine, they can't open it. More fun with IT any Payroll.

Somewhere on FT there is a TDY guide if you want to know the specifics.

If you currently commute to reserve, it can be a very good deal. Positive space, hotels are paid, per diem, and pick up all the short call that you can.

Your PBS page will be updated to show where you rank, and bid. This is a good deal if you commute, as you get positive space. Also a good deal if you have family that wants to visit DC, as you get a hotel room. As noted, good luck with the per diem worksheet. You have a choice of field layover or downtown layover hotels, and if reserve you may want to verify transportation with crew planning, as DCA covers 3 airports. I believe they provide it for you.

I did this two years ago, and unsuccessfully volunteered for it when it was offered again.

You can work this two ways: positive space roundtrip (once), and get your hotel paid for the whole month...plus per diem for every day of the month. It's as though the hotel is your apartment....you don't have to checkout.

Or, if you checkput for each trip and want to go home, you get PS before/after every trip...but you only get per diem for the days you are in the hotel.

As a lineholder, I went with "b."

In my fleet, it tends to go senior. Also, if have any vacation in that month...you're not eligible.

I scored TDY during a month with vacation. Either they screwed up or there is some wiggle room on that. Worth bidding it even you have vaca that month.
