I-pad battery

How much does everyone get per day out of their (company) I-pad in hours?

Assuming most of the time, it is in airplane mode with wifi off except when connected for retrieving flt plan, Wx and other preflight data.

Is there any fleet with a power outlet on the captains side of the deck?

I am on my second one of this series and I suspect the replacement was used, considering the poor battery life.

787......Mine is always plugged in so I can't answer your question.

When not plugged in, ~10% per hour seems the average.

Other's mileage may vary.

While in airplane mode - wifi and bluetooth off - and with 50% screen brightness on, the iPad lasts about 4 hours of constant use (screen always on while using JeppFD following along route.). I shut it off and let it charge during break bringing it back to 100% by the time I return to cockpit.

If you allow the screen save mode (screen auto shut-off if not touched), with light to moderate use you will get abut 10 hours (10% per hour as someone mentioned above.)

Go to settings>privacy>location services>Jepp FD PRO and either turn it off or only when in use. It uses a ton of juice looking for or updating position info, even when the iPad is off. Also try closing all your apps when at cruise and you don't need it anymore.

Also go to settings>general>accessibility>reduce motion "on"

The line user guide also has a bunch of other worthless settings you can turn off to minimize battery consumption.

Fifi has power supplies in a lot of planes.

Screen brightness is a battery hog. I like mine bright, and it will eat up a full charge in no time. 50% brightness barely touches the battery.
Last week DFW-IAH I used 75% of my battery, from preflight to taxi in. Daytime flight, max brightness, screen on the whole time. OTOH, I've had 50% left after LAS-EWR. Night flight, lowered screen brightness, screen off after climb out until briefing.

Get an OEM Apple 3 meter cord. It will reach from the FO's outlet to your ipad tray. I have a 2 meter cord, which is long enough to charge if you hold the ipad in your lap.

I can go bright in night mode for the jepp. app and it seems to last forever. Day mode same brightness and I'm hosed.

So I do night mode during cruise day or night.

Night mode by itself uses more power than day mode, because the liquid crystal display has to work harder to display dark colors. However, there is an auto dimming feature that dims the led back light in dark conditions, even though you don't adjust the brightness. That explains why you get better battery at night. I see guys running night mode during the day all the time, and it cracks me up a little inside.

I only learned this when I was researching the advantages of the Samsung AMOLED screen over apple's LED back lit LCD displays.

The 777 300 has a nice plug on both sides, the rest of the fleet is going to have a power source available 7 years ago as we have our sa pilots working on it. Well maybe in the next 7 years. Last time I was out there even the tk guys have given up on when the upgrades. However in the 300 it is really nice.
