Once you have picked up say a 2000 Tuesday SC via CCS at the 1100 APU on a 'last-day-off' Monday... you are not going to be called until 2000 Tuesday at the earliest (unless maybe they release you from SC to assign you a trip in 12 hrs). I got hosed badly the other day after picking up an 0200 SC and with no open trips visible at 2300 bedtime... they called at exactly 0200 for an 0430 mx ferry show time. *&^%$#$@%*!!!!! A SC officially lasts 14 hours, but after 11.5 hrs you are effectively unusable even for a DH (unless you agree to accept extra pay to be at the airport in less than 2.5). It is not unusual to get released a couple hours early from a SC that will go unused... and be assigned a trip with a showtime in 12 hours. You still get credit from the unused SC though. |
All varies widely by BES.
3-C-1-b covers MPG increase (not add pay) for unused short call/FSB 3-A-3 covers blended rate for all non-flying segment hours Short version: In base reserves want SC and VDO assignments for more money. Commuters want aggressive pickup of commuteable trips/FSB for more time at home. Not a personal criticism, but the general lack of knowledge of reserve rules demonstrates that there is 1) a need to improve them, and 2) no way improvements will ever pass. |

One other caveat. On short call, they can release you, and assign a trip with a show time 10 hours later. I had a 2000 SC, they called at 0004, and assigned a 1004 show time ferry flight.

If instead of picking up a SC, you simply have one assigned to you and then don't get used, does that still count? I was also under the impression that CS was assigning everyone to SC all the time leaving virtually no one on long call, true?
2. Not true. For example, if you are in a four day silo with three other guys there might be a couple of SCs available between the four of you. If no one picks them up, CS will usually assign them to the top guys in the silo. However, if the guys above you have each done 2 SCs already CS can skip down the silo to the first guy with 0-1 SCs - which can be a nasty surprise when you thought you were safe deep down in your silo. My last block of reserve started with me at #4 in the 4 day silo - I didn't bother picking up a SC and stayed home on day 1 sitting long call. |
Lest we bring up what I call the SC loop? They release you early to rest you for an earlier SC thus never being able to break that cycle. I think my record was 4 in a row.

73 hours min . . . shows how out of touch I am with RSV rules. Shame on me.
Anyways, 12 guys with 3+ and one with 8. Looks like what's a PITA for commuters is actually a plus for local guys. How exactly does SC work? Are you assigned a specific window? Can they call you anytime? I guess I should probably read up on RSV rules at some point. Also, typical, they call you 6 hours into your window and tell you, you are released, and assigned another short call for the next day. As you said, night mare for commuters. Rolling continuous short calls, just because the crew desk can. You can have most of the reserve list on short call, no rhyme or reason as to how many, or when, just because they can. Also, and this is he bonus round, you can still sit 24 hr short call/duty cycle. 14 hours short call, 10 hour minimum rest. As Mako said, if your fleet is fat, you get a lot of pay to stay at home. If not, hope you have a good crash pad. Oh, and the crew desk can build short calls at any time of day they like. You check and see what is open--no short calls. Great! An extra night at home you say?? Not so fast, 1 hour later, they build a slew of short calls so no one that wants them can pick them up, and you guessed it, the commuters get the now unwanted short calls. Almost like they check who is picking up, and they don't want to pay for extra short calls. One of the very few gets because of FAR 117, is, coming off days off. They can't assign you anything before 10 am. You can pick up before that, but they will try to get you to bite. Don't. That's what's rumored the company wanted in exchange for some other stuff on the contract extension. |

The first two unused SCs are for free then each subsequent unused SC pays one hour of Add Pay. When I bid reserve I can usually get between 6-8 unused SCs as a IAH 777 FO. Your experience may differ depending on base, fleet and seat. And yes, your pay is blended on reserve.

Also remember that reserve guarantee is 73 hours, not 70, so your add pay begins from there. With aggressive pickup of SC's, I think it's a no brainer to expect at least 75 hours of credit a month.
It is an increase in your MPG and not ADD PAY. There is a difference. Hog |

They have set the precedent of paying for the SC picked up by the RSV. They have been doing it for almost 3 years so I don't know how they could claim they weren't aware of what they were doing. I don't think a clawback grievance would go in their favor.
Enjoy the IT shortcoming in that section of the UPA as long as it lasts. Lee |
