Don't get me wrong....if SWA ever decides to get a bigger plane and it's based where I live then yeah, I'll bid it. I just have no desire to drive to the airport, sit around for an hour, commute 2+ hrs, sit for another hour or so, go to work, and then repeat on the way home with maybe a hotel stay in there if it's not commutable. Been there, done that...not for me. With all that wasted time I can pick up a easy day trip for an extra $1k+.

Uncommutable widebody trips? You’d have to try very hard to find one.

Was thinking more 75/67 trips, which most of my friends are on to avoid the 737/320.

Don't look at LAX 777 trips.

Still, I'd rather commute to WB flying than live in base and fly NBs. Any day of the week and twice on Sundays. And if I ever get tired of WB flying, I can always bid back to NBs. It's nice to have choices.

Yeah, that’s apples to oranges there. 756 is mostly 757 and 767-300”s that don’t pay widebody rates. Only a handful of 767-400”s are widebody aircraft paying a widebody rate. 90% of our actual widebody international flying 777/787/767-400 is extremely commutable stuff. 756 especially west coast... not even in the same universe really.

Curious- is it the $$ or the flying? I assume you mean as a line holder?

More money and less days worked in a month. Both for reserve and line holder. I think type of plane and where it goes matters less then above.

The flying is sooo much easier than NB flying. Almost always just one flight per day. If the trip's augmented, I get paid to sleep on the flight.

Both the money's better and I can fly more hours per month because I don't feel like crap after flying an ID. But that's not a factor.

Line or reserve doesn't matter; QOL on widebodies is better than NBs. I have gone between bottom lineholder and reserve for a long time.

777 Captain comes home from his HKG trip. As he is pulling into the driveway he sees that his wife has just gotten home and is unloading things from her car. He pulls into the garage, gets out of the car, and goes over to his wife:

Captain: " what is all this?

Wife: "what?"

Captain: " what are all these bags???"

Wife: " what is the big deal? I just got some things at the mall."

Captain: " What is the big deal? What is the big deal? do you know how long I have to sleep to pay for all this?"

I have this horrible recurring nightmare when I'm sleeping in the bunk. Always wake up in a cold sweat. ... I dream that I'm back flying a guppy. The Horror! :p

WB flying's not for everyone. There are some who can't sleep in a plane - for them, WB international flying sux.

Some can't stand not being in charge and take the leap to NB Capt - a lot more work for little/no extra money - but hey, they're in charge (on the other hand, they have to be in charge).

WB flying's not for everyone, but I like that I have the option to go back to NB if I ever tire of WB flying (not likely). I have zero problems retiring as a WB FO.

Crew meals are an absolute benefit and make a huge difference in work QOL. Maybe you're just too picky of an eater. We have a ton of options for food preferences, some of which are healthy. Salmon with quinoa and broccoli is healthier than whatever crap you might buy on a turn in ORD. I do wish for a little more variety sometimes but whatever. I did an almost 7 hour transcon last week. The idea of eating trail mix the whole way is asinine.
