I was a new hire into the 777 at CO in 2007. They had unfilled vacancies. They overtrained on the airplane because they were so worried about us, but woefully undertrained ya on intl ops and ETOPS where we actually needed instruction.

It turned out fine; 777 is a hell of a lot easier to fly than a 737 in my opinion.

So it could happen, but not while anyone in property is bidding for WB vacancies.

MOP just phrased his post poorly. As has been clarified, the 777 and 787 haven't gone junior enough (no unfilled bids) for a new hire to get one of those aircraft.

As per our contract, in order for a newhire to get a BES, there has to be an unfilled vacancy. I'm not going to look back on each bid, but the bulk of unfilled bids have been 737 and A320, with some 756 vacancies that have gone unfilled.

Yes, LCAL had some 777 vacancies for newhires but LUAL has, to my knowledge, never had a newhire go to the 777. At least in the last 16 years.

So they need to do pretend students for those fleets (777 and 787), as a minimum.

I won't be one of the pilots who will take advantage of this opportunity, but I'm glad that some junior reserve pukes will be able to get 90 hours just for playing student. And I'm glad that they're spooling up the number of PIs at TK - hopefully to get ready for a lot of training requirements.

I am not 100% sure that LUAL never had newhire go to the 777 or the 400. But they sure as heck have had some almost new hires hit those fleets in the past.

United also hired Tracy Aces. A long time ago.

Can you give any examples of probationary pilots hired in the last 16 years to the 777 or 400? I'm trying to limit this to people who did not watch a live baseball game where Babe Ruth was a player.

So I suppose the DEN g-lines will jump up 10% tomorrow due to all the junior guys filling sim seats instead of sitting reserve as well? I don’t particularly want to drive to TK 18 times next month though. Unintended consequences of not utilizing line pilots for the, uh, line....

How about 18 years?

I know 2 guys that were hired in 2000 and went to 727 engineer training. The day they finished 727 school, they put 747 F/O bids into the system, and were awarded them a few days later. I believe they had been with United less than 3 months.

Seat locks were much different back then too. Had under 3 year Captains.

Well of course not since 2002, because this little thing called 9/11 and then bankruptcy happened. But in the late 90’s there sure as heck were proby guys going to the right seat of the 400 and 777. In 2000 I was a line holding F/0 on the 777 with three years seniority.

I think these types of assignments should belong to folks at TK and this is a trial balloon and also a way to get around paying PI's overtime. Just about all of the items from the company's opener was manpower negative. Many of the those items in the opener are TK manpower negative. Something stinks about this.

It doesn't seem like the management at TK would make the decision to do this. This idea had to come from Labor Relations in Chicago. I won't be surprised to see a grievance on this and I would personally stay away from applying to something like this until we hear more from the MEC.
