Saw an old thread on it but can’t find anything recent. Anyone have a clue on the commute from SEA to SFO? Heard it used to be tough being an old base and all.

lots of commuters, but also lots of flights. Not the easiest commute.

Yeah, it really sucks waking up and being at the ski area in 15 minutes, having mountain bike trails that go up to 10,000 feet right out my back door, a wilderness area minutes away, and Lake Tahoe 25 min away. And I just hate that I don’t get to pay state income tax. You should definitely stay wherever it is that you are.

That eternal bliss of outdoor amazing lifestyle shrouded by the fact that your commute is an oversold RJ, number 15 for the jumpseat on a 737 to Oakland, or a 4 hour drive down a mountain with chains. But yes, that no income tax and ski slopes are amazing.

Side note, how long is the commute on skis from Heavenly to SFO?

If chain controls are in effect it’s a lot longer than 4 hours from Reno.

Might actually be faster on skis.

Yep, we already establised that it’s a crappy commute and I spent a couple paragraphs earlier detailing exactly why. Seems particularly bad right now. But the widespread perception of Reno as all cheesy casinos and desert is pretty inaccurate if you know anything about the Sierras. It was, however, helpful in keeping property values low for awhile even in the south near the mountains. That 10% saved on CA income tax paid most of the mortgage. Those days are over though and this whole conversation is probably moot because housing prices have gotten ludicrous for new buyers.

Hello... We are considering a move to RNO and are watching the flights to-from SFO recently to get an idea of the commute. Planning on flying vs driving as much as possible and willing to buy the discount tickets if jump-seating is as difficult as it's been mentioned. My main question at this point is that we've seen a few cancelations recently (mostly cited to crew availability)... Is that a common occurrence? Any projections/insights on the number of flights on UAL metal per day? Seasonal variability? Right now I'm mostly seeing 3-4 flights per day, with 1 or 2 of them mainline. TIA

I would never want to predict what plans United has for Skymess out of RNO. Your estimation is about right at present. For some reason they’ve been canceling most of the late afternoon flights. Crew availability seems plausible but I’ve been pulled off two flights recently because of “temperature” (pretty sure that meant density altitude issues but who knows). Southwest to OAK and SJC are much more reliable but they cut back to one a day since COVID. And Uber to SFO is getting pricey. It is nice to always have the backup of driving but be prepared to use it. A lot. That or the magic words “California Sick”.
